A master sergeant and three civilians devoted a total of 230 days to composing the "on-the- job training" manual. Just 500 copies were published and distri buted to enlisted men assigned as aides to generals, at a total pub lishing cost of $5,572.71. These vital statistics were pub lished by a House appropriations subcommittee which had ealied on the Air Force for an explanation of the controversial manual. The manual, which popped up at a House armed services sub committee hearing on Feb. 2, is one of several put out by the Air Force which have stirred contro versy and sparked - two congres sional investigations. Chairman Francis E. Walter iD-Pa.) of the House Committee on Unamerican Activities plans to quiz the Air Force Thursday on why it withdrew a manual which contained charges of Communist infiltration of some churches. Wal ter said the charges were "abso lutely true." An armed services subcommit tee, on the other hand, is laying groundwork for an inquiry into how this manual came to be is sued. Explaining the manual for gen-i erals aides, the Air Force said Lome of the contents had been "misconstrued," or could be, any way. This presumably referred to sections on how to bathe a dog. shine shoes, clean toilets, mop, dust, wait on the table, and greet guests. "The fact that certain tasks or procedures were included in' the manual docs not indicate that such duties were to be performed regularly by the airman aide as a routine part of . his duty," the Air Force said. Footprinters Plan Lunch Klamath Falls Chapter 19. In ternational Footprinters, made fi nal plans at a recent luncheon meeting for a dinner-dance to be held at the Yacht Club Saturday night, February 27. Members of the dance commit tee are William Fink, Ted Mil lion, and Larry Bergmann. In charge of decorating arc Mrs. Lar ry Bergmann, Mrs. James Kaler, Mrs. Ted Million and Mrs. Don Nolan. James Koler is president: Larry Bergmann, secretary, and Charles Howard, treasurer. The local chapter awards a $250 annual scholarship to a senior high school student who plans a ca reer in law enforcement at some accredited college or university. Members of the Footprinters are recruited from law enforcement officers at the city, county, state and federal levels and from among businessmen who have a sympa thetic attitude . toward law en forcement. Germany AP' Elvis Presley says there won't be any change in his singing style when he returns to civilian life shortly. "I've no reason to change." the rnck 'n' roll idol and Army ser geant said in an interview Tues day. "The people will let you know when you should." Presley's two-year service hitch ends next month, but the Army isn't giving the exact date. It wants to avoid a repetition of the een-age riot that greeted the sing er on his arrival in Germany 17 mouths ago. Elvis, now 24, said he is glad to be getting out but quickly added "It was a good experience in many ways and I made friends I would not have made otherwise. I'm very proud of having been in the Army." The Army apparently is satis fied with Elvis, too. "He has done remarkably well both his his Army duties and off duty," said one of his commanders. Presley has been serving with an armored division at Fricdberg. He recently won his sergeant's stripes and was made leader of a scout squad. Although he made- no records in Germany, Presley said he kept abreast of music developments. Quartet' Winners The annual Dad's Weekend quar tet contest at the University of Oregon was won for the third straight year by Sigma Phi Epsi Ion. Singing baritone with this year's winning group was ' Stuart Miller of Malin. Stuart, active in singing groups, is a member of the University Singers who will soon go on spring tour. Con's Letter Claims Body Provides Clue SACKAMENTO, Calif. (API- Caryl Chessman, writing what he Icjrcd would be his last letter, told Gov. Edmund Brown a miss ing body would prove he is inno cent of the crimes tor which he was condemned. The 1,500-word letter, released Tuesday by Brown, did not iden tify the body or tell how it would exonerate him. Chessman, 38, said he had other evidence which, "in the absence of the body, would be by itself worthless." He termed the evi dence he had "like a jigsaw puzzle." Chessman said the body, of a man, was missing when he sent a representative to look for it. He did not say where the search was. Brown released the letter, re marking that Chessman had agreed to making it public after asking earlier that it be kept con fidential. George T. Davis, one of Chess man's attorneys, told newsmen in iSan Francisco he was filing papers with the secretary of stale in Sacramento today for the in corporation of "The People Against Capital Punishment. Inc." Davis said the convict-author plans another letter to Brown and "wants to offer the governor an unequivocal way out." He did not say what that would be. The governor says the last Chessman letter was not a factor in the reprieve, merely a last desperate effort in Chessman'a II 3-year fight to evade the San Quentin Prison gas chamber. A court hearing is to be held Thursday in Los Angeles to set a new execution date for Chess-, man.
