"I don't know what made me do it," F'lorcncio lioiiue Fernan dez said. Two policemen, alerted by a woman's scream, chased Roque into a cave on the outskirts of this north-central Argentine town Saturday night. One remained on guard while the other went for reinforcements. When more police arrived, they found Roque curled up In the cave, fast asleep. Roque's nocturnal forays had terrorized ' Monteros. He preyed on unattached women, breaking into their bedrooms while they slept to fasten his teeth in their throats. In the best Dracula tradition, he wore a black hat and cape on his raids. His task was facilitated by a recent heat wave here which made most people sleep with their bedroom windows open. CALL FOR YOUTH LEAMINGTON. Spot Swings To Ex-Model LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ex model Carole Trcgoff may take the spotlight in the Finch murder trial today. For two months she has silently watched a courtroom duel with her life at stake. Soon the fateful decision must be made: Shall she testify? Red-haired Miss Trcgoff, 23, and Dr. R. Bernard Finch, 42, arc on trial accused of murder and con spiracy in the shooting last July 18 of his estranged second wife, Barbara Jean, 36. For eight days Miss Tregoff watched the rich socialite surgeon on the witness stand as he fought for his life. Her expression was solemn. broken by an occasional smile. Tears came once, when Dr. Finch was asked If he still loved her and wanted to marry her. "Yes," he said, "if she'll still have me." Dr. Finch said his wife was shot accidentally while he scuffled with her over a pistol he said she drew. He denied the prosecution's coiv lenlion that he and his mistress went to the Finch home in West Covina lo kill Mrs. Finch so he and Carole could marry and keep the entire Finch estate. The crew-cut doctor insisted they went there to offer Mrs. Finch a speedy Nevada divorce. Carole is the only one who could support Dr. Finch's claim. She could tell the jury whether the lovers hired police character Jack Cody lo kill Mrs. Finch, as Cody claims, or to get divorce evi dence on her. as Dr. Finch con tends. But they sent a first-class chill down the American spine with Deputy Premier Anastas Mikoy an's trip lo Cuba. The United States doesn't like it. But what is it going to do about it? Not much right away, it seems. What the Soviets proved w;is that two can play at the one sided game this country has been playing a Ion; time. We have been rooting around in their backyard for years. Nine were re leased Saturday night on $250 bail each, but the two minors in the group were held over the weekend by juvenile authorities. Hearings on the charges were scheduled in municipal court to day. Some of the students said they will demand trial by jury. One of the students arrested was Susan Ellen Fine, 18, of East .Meadow, N.Y., a Reed freshman. Said Miss Fine: 'I heard a rumor that someone called the police because we were singing. We were singing but nol terribly loudly. We were picket ing but nothing disorderly. "We think his "Schrunk'si ban is unconstitutional. We don't in tend to be intimidated." Carolyn Ponieroy, 20, Altadena Calif., said she also would ask for a jury trial and said she was confident today's hearing would be postponed until next week "The arrests are political," she said. "One of the reasons we were down there was to protest the order by Mayor Schrunk that picketing in large numbers is il legal." Sgt. William Hoguc said he directed the arrests. As for Latin America we spread help there, too, although not as freely as elsewhere. That part of the world was under our wing. The Soviets were far away and it seemed safe. We had the Monroe Doctrine for Latin America: no foreign inter' venticn there. We were thinking of military intervention, of course. There were local Communists in Latin America but they did not control a government. With everything so tidy close to home, we even extended a kind of Monroe Doctine to Western Europe, called the Truman Doc trine. It told the Soviets American interests were worldwide and not to push our friends around.
