Insulin Linked To Leukemia By California MD LUb ANGELES (AP)-Insulin nas prolonged the lives of mil lions or diabetics but a oatholo gist says it also may be connected with the sharp increase in leu- norma in the last 25 years. Dr. Daniel Stowens, associate proiessor ot pathology at the Uni. versity of Southern California, eays insulin, as such, is not the cause of leukemia, which is char acterized by an excess of white corpuscles in the blood But, Dr. Stowens says, insulin has enabled millions of female diabetics to grow to maturity and nave DaDies, and it now appear; that leukemia, sometimes re fcrred to as blood cancer, is more prevalent in families that have a History of diabetes. Dr. Stowens' conclusions, which he admits are tentative, are based on 20 years of research with leu kemia patients at Children's Hos pital in Hollywood. His report ap peared Wednesday in a copy righted story in the Long Beach rress-Telegram AUTOMATION TAKES OVER TRENTON, N.J. iUPI) - Auto mation replaced a thousand pota to pickers in New Jersey last year, the state Agriculture De partment has reported. The department said 37 per cent of the state's potato crop was har vested by machine in 1959. Most ot the displaced workers, the agency said, were farm laborers from the southern states.
