Insulin Linked
To Leukemia
By California MD
LUb ANGELES (AP)-Insulin
nas prolonged the lives of mil
lions or diabetics but a oatholo
gist says it also may be connected
with the sharp increase in leu-
norma in the last 25 years.
Dr. Daniel Stowens, associate
proiessor ot pathology at the Uni.
versity of Southern California,
eays insulin, as such, is not the
cause of leukemia, which is char
acterized by an excess of white
corpuscles in the blood
But, Dr. Stowens says, insulin
has enabled millions of female
diabetics to grow to maturity and
nave DaDies, and it now appear;
that leukemia, sometimes re
fcrred to as blood cancer, is more
prevalent in families that have a
History of diabetes.
Dr. Stowens' conclusions, which
he admits are tentative, are based
on 20 years of research with leu
kemia patients at Children's Hos
pital in Hollywood. His report ap
peared Wednesday in a copy
