However two defendants are to be arraigned at 10 a.m. Monday These are William Olen Gairson. 40-year-old Bonanza ranchhand charged with first degree murder, and Phillip Duane Jackson, 23 Bonanza, charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. The grand jury indiuted Gait con in the death of U-month-old Gary Lee Bursik, youngest son of the woman Gairson was living with on a Bonanza area ranch. The child died December 17. At Cairson's preliminary hearing last Wednesday the child's mother, Mrs. Ethel Myrtle Bursik, said Gairson beat the child's head against the floor and threatened to kill it after the baby apparently had bitten his finger. Ctairson also faces trials on cruelty charges .in the alleged beatings of Gary Lee and his 3 year-old half-brother, Billie Joe Breeding, a child still staying in the county juvenile home where he was taken in a badly beaten, condition December 18. Those tri als are scheduled for Tuesday district court. CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP)-Scl- eiiusis nave run an ion engine . long enough to consider it a pretty dependable way of getting space rockets tip to speeds like 100,000 m.p.h. That is a good space pace, es peciany considering that an ion . engine has less push than the muf fled echo of a butterfly's sigh. An ion is an atom that has lost or gained one or more electrons, - thereby becoming positive or neg ' ative, like profit and loss. Both kinds of ions can be made to go faster than money. Ion fans and scientists will be Interested in knowing that a test engine has been run for a total of SO hours at the Lewis Laboratory of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Scientist Howard J. Childs says this is an encouraging sign that ion engines can be depended upon. He also says this model is 5 to 58 per cent efficient. It is hoped that later models can be 80 or 90 per cent efficient. People who are not Ion fans or scientists might think that an en gine with no more kick than a passing thought, yet capable of 100,000 m.p.h. on the speedometer, would be slicker than anything De troit can turn out. But the hot-rodders may as well relax and go back to their internal combustion engines. Ion engines have their drawbacks. For one thing, the current model oses liquid cesium at $600 to tl.OOO a pound in a chemical re action with tungsten to produce a stream of ions. It is the jet stream of ions that propels the vehicle. There is an even bigger catch. Ion streams won't work in an at mosphere. Too much resistance. That means you have to get your Ion buggy up into orbit. And or bits require a launching pad and tons of chemical rocket fuel. I'M WORTH A LOT! Alaska (API The Slate Legislature is going to get going on schedule in Juneau Monday, but it is only be cause Uncle Sam and his Coast Guard lent a hand. There was a question as to whether the Legislature was go ing to open on time. Fog, thick swirling, impenetrable fog wrapped itself around Juneau, the slate capital, Monday, then stub bornly refused to steal away. Travel in and out of Juneau, ex cept for a couple ot wave-skipping seaplanes, has been slopped cold. There have been no large com mercial airliner lakeoffs or land ings at Juneau since Monday. There is no passenger boat serv ice to Juneau. Juneau cannot be reached by road without ferrying Some of the legislators have flown as much as 5,000 miles since Monday aboard planes which have probed the Juneau fog bank, trying unsuccessfully to find a clear path lo the capital city's air field. They've been to Anchorage, In Fairbanks, to Seattle and to White- horse, Y.T., and back back to Annette Island and the one-story, dormitory-like building that has become a second home. Twenty-seven legislators have been stuck here, along with -93 other airline passengers, including legislative employes. At first they found the experience amusing. Then, pinochle, poker, chess, checkers, reading, story-spinning and snoozing began to wear thin. The lawmakers appealed lo Gov. William A. Egan for help. Egan looked at the forecast Thursday night at least four more days of fog for Ihe capital and asked the Coast Guard for aid. Most of the legislators left here for Juneau Thursday night aboard Ihe Coast Guard cutter Balsam. The rest of the lawmakers will try to get to Juneau via seaplane. The others stranded here will just have to wait out the fog. The whole experience has been deeply satisfying to Slate Rep. Earl Hillslrand of Anchorage. Ilillstrand is chairman of the Anchorage Capitol Site Steering Committee, a group seeking :to move the capitol from Juneau to the Anchorage area, with one of the main arguments being that Juneau is loo inaccessible to most of the stale. "I don't think I have to empha size the issue," Hillslrand said. "Everyone appears to be doing a good job of talking it up right now." FIRST FLAG FLYER Captain Robert Gray, Triverton, R.L, became the first man to sail the American flaR around the world. He did it in 1789-1790 aboard Ihe ship Columbia and repeated the journey in 1791-1793. u nartjw, . eiiliiMii I i - - I ' , ; - - V ) , , . iWJr-i yv a-,- HOUSE PLANTS Come see our gay . flourishing array of all your favorites YOUR CHOICE 4 for Right now we are abloom with beautiful buys in growing green plants.
