NINR SA Notes Busy Month r December was an exceptionally ', busy month for workers at Salva tion Army headquarters with ad ditional effort placed on functions of the Christmas Clearing Bureau which was operated through the SA. Services rendered to individuals and families included 142 meals in a restaurant; 17 lodgings in a ho tel; transportation furnished for one; 275 garments distributed; 25 pairs of shoes given out; four blan kets; two grocery orders and one rent order. In addition corps officers made 89 home calls totaling 41 hours, placed five in employment, made five long distance telephone calls, wrote six letters and referred two persons to the White Shield Home Money spent on the special Christmas project totaled $2,280.37, The sum of $284.25 went for serv ices rendered. Christmas cheer included the giving of 84 baskets, toys to 241 children, sunshine gifts to the Klamath County Nursing Home, county jail and juvenile home to taled 144. Four parties were given for children with 135 attending. Operation of the Christmas Clear ing Bureau, a volunteer commU' nity service included the process. ing of 184 applicants for aid; 950 individuals involved; 30 groups us ing the bureau; 163 families re, ceived baskets; 624 children re ceived toys and 32 names of chil dren were turned in for the Christ inas party. Name Official For New Club Van Doren Leaves Jury NEW YORK (UPI). Charles Van Doren, who lied to a grand jury about his participation in a rigged television quiz show, be came a' grand juror himself Wednesday but only for seven hours. The 33-year-old, curly - haired former English instructor was chosen to serve on a federal grand jury when his name was pulled from a hopper. He was sworn in. Seven hours later he was ex cused from serving at his own request and to the relief of the court and the Department of Justice. Van Doren had won $129,000 on the defunct quiz show "Twenty One" and had claimed before a New York County grand . jury that he had not received either questions or answers in his ap pearances. Later he recanted and admitted he had been coached. He said he requested to with draw from the federal panel be cause of the publicity after it was disclosed he had been chosen. The Golden Age Club" official-l ly became the name of a new local organization for senior citi zens during an election meeting Wednesday afternoon. The 50 new members present elected W. M. Miller of 31)54 South Sixth Street to the first presidency. Mrs. Vera Clemmens of Route 3 became vice president and Mrs. J. G. Stewart of 501 North Elev enth Street, secretary. George Price, city park and rec reation director, broadcast a plea for volunteers to instruct in the club's arts and crafts program that is going to begin right away. "We're looking for anyone with an interesting skill who is willing to spend an hour or two a month teaching other people," Price said. Price also said the club can use donations of arts and crafts equip ment, such as leather tools and painting equipment. The department is looking for an organization of some kind willing to provide transportation for club members who otherwise won't be able to attend meetings. The club will meet each Wednes day from 2 until 4 p.m. in the dressing rooms of the municipal swimming pool unless other quar ters are secured. Price adds that his department will be represented at meetings in the future, only to offer assistance, not to supervise. During subsequent meetings, the membership will begin selecting committees to handle various plan ning areas. Vital Stats Recapped LAKE VIEW Some of the sta tistics garnered at the Lake Conn tv Courthouse from 1959 records show there were 17 marriages dur ing the year and 12 divorces. The tola! of births for the year was 159 as compared with 140 for the previous year, and 61 deaths as compared with 56. A report from the tax collecting department of the sheriff's office showed that, as of January 5, there had been $720,702.70 of the 1959-60 tax collections turned over to the county treasurer. This does not indicate the discounts taken for early payment of taxes. The total to be collected for the year was $903,051.74, leaving $182,349.04 still on the books. At the post office, Assistant Post mastor William Bach figured the gross receipts for 1959 at $61,629.96, or a 12 per cent increase over 1958. The cancellations were 986,327. In money orders and fees there was a gain of 26 per cent. The total in money orders was $285,352.55 and fees were $3,659.40. There were 15,501 money orders issued. Postmaster Fred Peat an nounced business at the post office was about the same during the hol idays as the previous year. There were 974 pieces of mail registered. (AP)-It look a railway section gang and a crow bar to pry James Hines, 65-year- old retired Navy veteran, out of the mud of the Marc Island chan nel here Wednesday. After 40 years on rolling decks, Hines usually is sure-footed when he crosses the little catwalk across the channel to go fishing, but Wednesday he fell face down in the .tar-like mud for which the channel is well-known. Southern Pacific track foreman Carlo Clerisci saw Hines fall and rushed to the spot with five labor ers. They managed to get Hines over on his back with a crowbar, and firemen used special 'equip ment to lift him from the mire and out on the bank. lie d have been dean in a matter of minutes," Clerisci said.
