The chamber is sporting a brand .new slate of officers for 10 . elected at a Friday morning board oi directors meeting. New presi dent, to replace Bob Mest January Jl, is W. H. "Bill" Graham, Klam alh Kalis plant manager for Johns "Manville. Bob Kent, secretary of Klamath Falls Creamery, was ' named first vice president: Fred ..Khlcrs, assistant manager of Swan "Lake Moulding, was elected sec md vice president, and J. D. "Monty" Monteith, assistant man--.ager of the downtown U.S. Nation al Bank of Portland, is the new .'chamber treasurer, replacing first National's diet Clark. The board l also rehired R. Frank Tucker as "chamber manager. Frank took Cover the managership of the local chamber in April 1S51. " Five new directors were recently j elected by the entire chamber membership. They are Paul Cruik "thank, superintendent, Great North rfJlveRailway; Thayne Cole, man-j-wfjrti' Pacilic Telephone and Tele graph; Ralph Hunter, manager, 'Fluhrer's Bakery; Melvin Miller, .co-owner, Dick B. Miller Company, and Frank Tarr, purchasing agent, -the Weyerhaeuser Company. All members of the chamber . board were the guests of retiring board member, Jack Bishop, man vSger of the local Weyerhaeuser ' operation, last Tuesday for a con ducted tour of some of Weyer haeuser's operations north and 'east of Klamath Falls. Assisting in -the tour (there were four carloads .making the 250-mile trip) were -Frank Tarr, Vince Bousquet, "woods manager, and forester, Thomas J. Orr. In the woods near iCamp 9. the group saw logs be ;lng loaded onto trucks and later, at a siding, witnessed those same logs being transferred, as a unit, -onto a waiting railroad car ... an amazing exhibition of skill, dex terity and efficiency. The direc tors showed matching dexterity in "getting seated at the table for lunch at Camp !)! For those who have never eaten a meal at a log ging camp, perhaps the best way to describe the food is to say that it is as good as any you have ever eaten, and there's five times as much of it! The groups will hold 'their first meetings Tuesday morn ing at 7 at the Winema, Wednes day noon at the Willard and .Wednesday and Thursday evenings 'si 7 o'clock at the chamber of ificcs. This is according to Dr. C. W. Topping, former Canadian prison warden now teaching at Willam ette University. Topping spoke Thursday night to the Oregon Slate District At torneys Assn., the Oregon State Sheriffs Assn. and the Oregon Prison Assn. He said the day of wardens with a firm belief in dark cells, pistol whipping and making pun ishment fit the crime was past. He labeled penal progress in Oregon, Washington and Califor nia in the last nine years amazing. In 1!K0, he said, he visited in stitutions in the three states on an oflicial lour. He said at the time he found virtually no constructive programs. Now, he said, it is different. He said Oregon State Penitentiary is doing a good job. But he criticized the lack of vo cational shops and educational fa cilities at the Oregon State Cor rection Institute near Salem. Topping formerly was warden at the Kingston Penitentiary at Ontario and headed the Univer sity of British Columbia sociology and criminology department. Jaywalker's Life Tougher NF.W YORK tUPl) The jay walker's life gets harder every day. Traffic authorities now have a gadget to shout orders at him if he ignores traffic lights. The device, unveiled Thursday at the busy corner of Fifth Ave. and 42nd Si., broadcasts a tape recorded message geared to the "walk" and "don't walk" signs. "Be careful!" the voice harks when the "don't walk" sign be gins blinking. "The flashing 'don't walk' signal indicates it is now loo late to leave the curb. If you are in the roadway cross quick ly to the other side of the street." Its message seems a little less friendly when the light for pedes trians turns red. "Don't walk," it orders. "Remember, jaywalking is against the law. You not only risk getting killed, but getting a summons as well." Officials said if "the voice" keeps pedestrians in line, similar devices will be installed at other key intersections throughout the city. Two People Hurt As Cars Pile Up PORTLAND (AP)-Seven cars piled up in a rush hour accident Thursday night on the Banfield Expressway near here. Two per sons were injured. The two were Don Quinn and Jim Henderson. They were riding in the third car, which rammed another car in the adjacent lane after being hit from behind.
