T undercore Iht farpn ma. ing of the holiday, Tha Associated Press asked a number of promi nent Americans this question: On Thanksgiving, 11159, what are the things in your own life you have most cause to be thankful for? Thousht-provoking replies came from figures well known in gov ernment, science, the arts. Dr. Paul Dudley White. Boston heart specialist "I find it impos sible to speak of any one circum stance for which I am thankful. There are many to mention, both general and personal. I"" "In the first place, as a physi cian, 1 am particularly thanktul for what has happened in medi cine during my lifetime in the U.S.A., with the remarkable ad vances that have come. Dupree Poe, a native of China, contended irregularities existed in his 1932 Marion County Circuit Court trial. His recent petition for a writ of habeas corpus was re jected by the U.S. District Court in Oregon. His constitutional right of due process and equal protection un der the law were denied, he con tended, when the trial court, aft er his conviction, refused to pro vide a means for him to appeal to the Oregon Supreme Court. Appellate Judge Walter L. Pope said in granting Poe's appeal right said "The district court de nied the petitioner's application without a hearing. Had he been given an opportunity to be heard, it is possible he might have made a case for relief." ize '. tha ame tin ht" much I Vice President Richard M. "As a doctor, 1 am also thankful that medical science can at this juncture of world history play such a role in the improvement in the lot of mankind, not only in our own country but especially in many parts of the world where there 'is still much suffering among the underprivileged. We doctors have the opportunity dur ing me next generation to con tribute toward the happiness and peace of the world, not only by our contributions to the health of the body, but at the same time by our efforts to improve mental health and the spirit itself." Plant Mulled By Dow Chemical SAX FRANCISCO (VP1) - The Dow Chemical Company has an nounced plans to build a chemi cal plant with a capacity to an nually produce some 36 million pounds of phenol. The plant will be built some where in the Pacific Northwest, according to R. L. Curtis, vice president, and Leland A. Doan, general manager of Dow's western division. The possible sites are near Pu- get Sound, Washinington, Long view, Washington, or Portland, Oregon. Several million dollars will be spent on property develop ment and plant construction before operations begin early in 1961. Thanksgiving. I can't help hut find running through my mind the i oppressions I have seen on trips to totalitarian countries. I am re minded that all of us should be thankful for something we ordi narily take for granted the free doms we cherish in America." Arthur Godfrey, television per sonality who underwent surgery for lung cancer last spring "On Thanksgiving Day, 1959, I am thanktul to be alive and heallhy." Nathan M. Pusey. head of Har vard University "Just as all of us are personally grateful for what school and college training did for us, I believe we Americans should give thanks today that the pur poses and needs of education are coming to be more widely cher ished and increasingly advanced by the general public. "On this Thanksgiving Day we must be grateful indeed for the ever-widening opportunities open to our young people to attain the higher reaches of learning and make their most effective contri bution to the moral and spiritual fiber of this nation." Henry A. Wallace, vice presi dent under President Franklin D. Roosevelt' and now specializing in progressive farming "I am ex ceedingly thankful that we have a president who could say at Abi lene, Kan., on Oct. 14: " 'No other aspiration domi nates my own being so much as this: that the nations of the East and West will find dependable, self-guaranlceing methods to re arma ments, so that a part of the sav ings may he used in a comprehen sive and effective effort for world improvement.' " Clare Roothe Luce, former U.S. ambassador to Italy "I am grateiul that the United States is a land where so many people are so free to make so many choices among so many things and ideas. I am grateful to all legislators who know that their task is Ihe orderly increase of every citizen's area of material choices: to our educators who understand that their task is to form every citi zen's mind to make reasonable choices: and to our churchmen of all faiths." Wernher von Braun. leader in rocket development for the gov ernment's space age program "I feel the meaning of the holiday can best be summed in the fol lowing quotation from H. W. Beecher: " 'If one should give me a dish of sand, and tell me there were particles of iron in it, I might look for them with my eyes, and search for them with my clumsy fingers, and be unable to detect them; but let me take a magnet and sweep through it, and how would it draw to itself the almost invisible particles by the mere power of attraction. The unthank ful heart, like my finger in the sand, discovers no mercies: but let the thankful heart sweep through the day, and as the mag net finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings, only the iron in God's sand is gold!'
