Oct. 23. Lewis A. Deyo of Seattle, the vessel's radio operator, said, too, that the ship's radar did not show accurately what lay ahead. He said he did not sec any buoys which he said usually are found at a harbor entrance. Deyo also expressed the belief that the ship's officers did not know its exact position in the few hours before the grounding. Deyo testified that alter he sen! an SOS at the request of Capl. Philip F. Curran of Baltimore. Md., he received replies from a Stales Line vessel and the Coast Guard station at Wcstporl, Wash, on Grays Harbor. '1 remembered," he said, "that the radio operator of the States Line ship had told me earlier that they were bound into Grays Harbor, too, but his master wa; taking it easy and slowing down to go in the next morning." Also testifying was the captain. whose vessel is in drydock here or inspection of damage to its keel. The ship came here under its own power Monday alter be ing pulled free by a tug Satur day. Curran testified (hat he and Deyo had spotted land on the radar screen but that it looked to be 25 miles away. Later, h said, they changed the setting to a four-mile range and noticed that the shore line was only two miles away. He added that im mediately after that, the vessel went aground. The ship's lookout. Leonard F. Stromberg of Providence, R. 1. testified that it was foggy when (he vessel hit bottom. Stranded Pair Saves Selves JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UPI) The Navy and Coast Guard rushed to the rescue of a coupl md their dog stranded in a small boat only "5 yards from Main Street. But it wasn't the Navy nor Coast Guard that actually brought them home Tuesday. The stranded couple, who spent Monday night lost in a tricky maze of waterways and marshes, dually gave up wailing for help and paddled out for themselves. Their boat had run out of gas. John Battles. 31, and his wife and their dog. a Chinese pug. lelt on a fishing trip in a 14-foot motorhoal Monday morning. They lost their way in the marshes west ol the city, and spent the night only a short distance from the city's main street, also U.S. 17. We could see the ears driv ing by," said Rattles. 'But when I (ried to walk to the highway. I sank up to my belt buckle." When the Battles failed to re turn, the Coast Guard dispatched a boat and the Navy sent i heli copter to hunt (or them.
