Blamed
In Sea Crash
PORTLAND (AP) - A Coast
Guard inquiry hoard was told
Tuesday the gyro compass and
the depth sounder aboard the
freighter Lipari were not func
tioning when it got stuck on a
sandbar near Grayland, Wash.
Oct. 23.
Lewis A. Deyo of Seattle, the
vessel's radio operator, said, too,
that the ship's radar did not show
accurately what lay ahead. He
said he did not sec any buoys
which he said usually are found at
a harbor entrance.
Deyo also expressed the belief
that the ship's officers did not
know its exact position in the few
hours before the grounding.
Deyo testified that alter he sen!

Philip F. Curran of Baltimore.
Md., he received replies from a
Stales Line vessel and the Coast
Guard station at Wcstporl, Wash,
on Grays Harbor.
'1 remembered," he said, "that
the radio operator of the States
Line ship had told me earlier
that they were bound into Grays
Harbor, too, but his master wa;
taking it easy and slowing down
to go in the next morning."

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UPI)
The Navy and Coast Guard
rushed to the rescue of a coupl
md their dog stranded in a small
boat only "5 yards from Main
Street.
But it wasn't the Navy nor
Coast Guard that actually
brought them home Tuesday.
The stranded couple, who spent
Monday night lost in a tricky
maze of waterways and marshes,
dually gave up wailing for help
and paddled out for themselves.
Their boat had run out of gas.

and their dog. a Chinese pug.
