Police were trying to untangle the puzzle Monday as they investi ited the shooting death of Gary Moretz, 18. Moretz apparently was shot in the back and chest about a half hour before he staggered mortally wounded to a car parked in Liber ty Park before dawn Sunday. A couple in the car told police the youth tried to talk before he died .Moretz had been at a drive-in restaurant earlier with former classmates. He told one he planned to go home. Officers could find no apparent motive for the s 1 a y i n g. The youth's wallet was untouched. Murctz, known to friends as a 'quiet, easy-going guy who never looked for trouble," earned a fool ball letter at suburban Central Valley High School last year be fore enlisting in the Navy. He was home on leave. after establishing a beachhead from which he could battle Vice President Richard M. Nixon for Midwestern support for the Re publican presidential nomination. Rockefeller made no sweeping in roads during a two-day stay here on the strong support Nixon com mands in thf Midwest. But the New York governor gained a little ground in meetings with newspaper executives and Republican leaders. Several con ceded that, while they were not sold on Rockefeller, they were im pressed by him and would not rush into any final decision on a presidential candidate. Rockefeller met Tuesday night with several prominent Midwest em businessmen at the exclusive Chicago Club. The list of guests was kept secret but it reportedly included some of the top contrib utors to GOP campaigns. The Rockefeller forces hope this foot in the door will expand into a full-fledged Rockefeller for president boom . in the Midwest. The Chicago visit was the first of a series Rockefeller plans into politically-strategic areas through out the country. He will visit California. Oregon, New England and probably Wis consin next month. His approach probably will be the same it was in Chicago speeches on top na- the nation's economy, farm policy and education. (AP) - In 1IIII3, while Grovcr Cleveland was president, Miss Emma McDaniel, then 32, was admitted to a men tal institution. Last week she died there after 66 years without receiving a single visitor or letter. Records show she was commit ted lr "simple melancholia." Staff doctors in 1941 described Miss McDaniel as a "very nice, quiet, agreeable old lady." Now it cannot even buy a toothpick. "Farthings may have finished their useful life," the treasury secretary said. The 203,5110,000 farthings jan gling uselessly in British pockets may meet their doomsday along with Britain's entire, mixed-up coinage system. James said once again Britain is humming with plans to sweep away the pound, shilling and pence system that complicates adding machines annd taxi meters, annoys bookkeepers and frightens tourists. He said the British Assn. for the Advancement of Science and the Assn. -of British Chambers of Commerce were studying the pos sibility of adopting the decimal coinage system. James noted that "nearly every important nation" in (he world has followed the American exam ple of using the decimal system of coinage.
