Owls Scholarly, But Plain Stupid, Says Researcher NEW YORK (AP) Despite their scholarly appearance, owls are just plain stupid, says Roger S. Payne, a graduate biologist at Cornell University. He stopped by the Bronx Zoo Monday, and his scorn for owls knew no bounds. . They are even dumber than chickens, if that's possible," he said. Payne bases his knowledge on two years of research with owls. He said that in his laboratory lie has seen owls take off from their perches and crash into the ralters time and time again.
