Mayor Dies
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (AP)
Mayor Clifford W. Lampkin
once told his lieutenants: Watch
for youngsters in worn-out shoes.
Then he bought 500 pair for chil
dren who were shabbily shod.
For six years his $333.33 month
ly salary, plus part of his fortune
from hotels, motels and real es
tate, went to boys clubs, chil
dren's parties, the needy, church
es, missions, and civic improve
ments., ,
Lampkin died of a heart condi
tion Tuesday at the age of 74,
just 12 hours before the Southern
Kentucky Fair opened at Lamp
kin Park which he created with
a $10,000 payment for its 85
acres.
"Bowling Green has been good
to me," he once said. "I want to
be good to it."
Owls Scholarly,
But Plain Stupid,
Says Researcher
NEW YORK (AP) Despite
their scholarly appearance, owls
are just plain stupid, says Roger
S. Payne, a graduate biologist at
Cornell University.
He stopped by the Bronx Zoo
Monday, and his scorn for owls
knew no bounds. .
They are even dumber than
chickens, if that's possible," he
said.
Payne bases his knowledge on
two years of research with owls.
He said that in his laboratory
lie has seen owls take off from
their perches and crash into the
ralters time and time again. He
had one owl that had to be force
fed for six months. When it fin
ally did eat it attacked the man
who fed it.
However, he had to admit that
stupid as owls arc, they seem to
elude researchers pretty well. He
has had considerable trouble get
ting enough to carry on his re
search.
