REYKJAVIK, Iceland AP) -Iceland has fish for sale. If it has its way, (he United States will buy a lot of it and thereby help this nation, a link in the North Atlan tic defense system, build its econ omy and diminish any dependency on the Soviet Union. A group of frozen food experts here from the United States agreed that the Icelandic fish is line tasting food. "We'll buy all we can get, just freeze it right, package it right and make the price right." said Walter Meier, froien food broker from Milwaukee. Meier indicated the flow of Ice landic fish to the United States may be stepped up considerably jne government invited Meier, Dave Elggren of Salt Lake City, Brock Steel of Orlando, Fla. and others to investigate the possibili-l ties. As it stands now, the United States seems to have won the bat tle for Iceland s political support but the need is to-,cement the: thing from an economic viewpoint. The fishing industry, representing 97 per cent of Iceland's exports, is the key. Government people say the for eign reserves accruing from work on the NATO airbase are useful but they want American support for the island's principal economy and the one it will have to live on under all circumstances, cold war or peace. Says the Foreign Office through its varying officialdom: "Back up the fishing export market, help us build roads, pow er plants, industry that will go forward eternally." Officially the government cannot say these things, Icelanders being too proud to hold out their hands, but this is what they believe. American State Department people here take the view also that the ups-and-downs of military spending at the air base disrupt the economy in the sense that one year 15 million dollars may be spent and the next year only 7 million. That is because military planning has to be what it is. Ambassador John J. Muccio. here almost five years, has tapped Icelandic thinking. Muccio and his energetic staff have captured the respect of Icelandic officials. Today one-third of Iceland's fish are going eastward to the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia. The United States is taking about 13 per cent, West, cod. haddock and herring catch Germany and Scandinavia about : exploded last September when 10 per cent each. From the West' ern nations.
