Icelandic Fish May Soon Appear On US Shelves As Trade Agreements Loom
. REYKJAVIK, Iceland AP) -Iceland
has fish for sale. If it has
its way, (he United States will buy
a lot of it and thereby help this
nation, a link in the North Atlan
tic defense system, build its econ
omy and diminish any dependency
on the Soviet Union.
A group of frozen food experts
here from the United States
agreed that the Icelandic fish is
line tasting food.
"We'll buy all we can get, just
freeze it right, package it right
and make the price right." said
Walter Meier, froien food broker
from Milwaukee.
Meier indicated the flow of Ice
landic fish to the United States
may be stepped up considerably

As it stands now, the United
States seems to have won the bat
tle for Iceland s political support

but they want American support
for the island's principal economy
and the one it will have to live

"Back up the fishing export
market, help us build roads, pow
er plants, industry that will go
forward eternally." Officially the
government cannot say these
things, Icelanders being too proud
to hold out their hands, but this is
what they believe.

that the ups-and-downs of military
spending at the air base disrupt
the economy in the sense that one
year 15 million dollars may be
spent and the next year only 7
million. That is because military
planning has to be what it is.
