Roger Ghijs, braving storm, calm, and a Potomac River bridge too low for his mainmast, has just brought the Belgian sail ing ship "Mercator" across the Atlantic bearing more bad news about Russia. The latest disquieting word is that when it comes to ships under sail, the Russian navy is fast pulling out ahead of the world. The United States isn't even try ing to keep up, although Capt. Ghijs is too diplomatic to say anything about that. Ghijs eased his 2110-foot three- master barkentine into Pier 5 here Sunday under auxiliary die sel power. He had wanted to come in under sail, for better ef fect. "But 1 ran out of wind," he explained. Colors ot his coats shade subtly to a deeper tone at the hem. coat trio called Oxford, Cam bridge and Harvard was in wide- shaded chalk stripes one blue, one brown, one green. Big smuggler collars turn down to become small canes. Coats range from shapely barrels with curving stave seams to flaring trumpet shapes. Some have braid buttons and big flapped pockets. Black and brown are the stars of the season, but sage, greens, white, carrot1, eggplant purple, or ange pink and rosy reds all are present in the Cardin collection. The small belted waist is out; the wide variety ranges from bloused-over tops giving the illu sion ot a longer waist to slightly waisted effects. Training Ended By Local Man Army Pvt. Sam E. Many other navies, on both sides of the Iron Curtain, can boast one, two or even three sail ing ships in their cadet training Heels, he reported. But the list he ticked off for reporters did not in clude the U. S.
