OREGON United States Population Might Double By Year 2000 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The United States can double It j present population of ITS mil lion by the year 2000 just 41 years away if the current rate of growth continues. A projection by the Population Reference Bureau, a private group specializing in population data, forecasts a population of 2S0 mil lion by 1980 an M million in crease from the present. This gain would almost equal the entire population of Japan in 1931 The bureau bases its projec tion on the 1950-190 birth rate. lon;er life spans, and heavy im migration. About 2d million persons have been added to the U.S. popula tion since 1930, about 46 per cent more than were born in the pre vious decade. Growth since 1950 nearly equals the population of either Poland or spam and is near ly double the population of Can ada. Numerically, the bureau says the growth from 1950-1960 will be the heaviest for any decade in the nation's history. The popula tion, at the I960 census is expect ed to be 18 per cent greater than it was in 1950 the highest per centage increase during one dec ade since 1900-1910. The 1950-1960 estimated growth of 28 million will nearly equal the entire nation's population in 1855. The birth rate reached a post war peak of 26 6 births per 1.000 persons rn 1947. dropped to 24.1 in 1950 but went back to 25.1 in 1952 and was 24 5 in 1958. The 1958 birth rate in this coun try, while 8 per cent below the 1947 level, was 30 per cent above the 1935-1J39 period. If current fertility rales are maintained." the bureau says. there will be an even greater delusc of births beginning in the mid-1960s when the children born since the war start to marry and have children of their own." By 1915 it had drooped to 13 per thousand, to 11 per thousand in 1921 ana 9 per thousand in l!u8. In 1900 the life expectancy was 47 years. State Feed And Seed Firms To Sponsor Flower Contest A contest to encourage Oregon residents to make the state "Ore gon, the land of flowers" will of ler prizes of up to $100 for culture of annuals, or flowers whose life spans measure a year or less. It is sponsored by Oregon Feed and Seed dealers and the Ted Knapp Greenhouses as a Centenni al promotion. Home owners with the best plant ings in each of the 17 districts the stale has been divided into for the contest will receive $10. Those judged second best wilt win So. From these finalists, judges will select four winners, who will re ceive 100, 75. $50 and S25 in that order. Entry deadline lor Klam ath County residents is July 10. Ap plication may be made at the Albers Feed Store on South Sixth Street and at Bussman's Feed Store on the corner of Ninth Street and Klamath Avenue. Judging will lake place in August. Rules for the contest are as fol lows: 1. The contest is open to all resi dents of the state. 2. Plants must be annual. 3. They mint be visible, from a public thoroughfare. 4. They may be sewn from seed or purchased as plants. 5. Enlrv blanks must be turned to a garden store of choice. 6. Entries must be filed by July 10. 7. F.nlianls will be atked to sub mit color 35 millimeter slide photo graphs of their diFplays. complete with names and addresses, to the Oregon Federation of Garden Clubs. The Camera Clubs of Ore gon have ottered assistance and advice. Slides will become prop erty of the sponsors to be used in a traveling library or neautitui homes throughout the state.
