APRIL 23, 1950- NEW MAKE-UP fashions demand strong emphasis on the eyes and Harriet Hub bard Ayer has a new Roll-O-Matic for applying mascara ROLL-O-MATIC With the current trend to light shades in lipstick, the eyes come into stronger focus than in many years, and in order to give the face as much glamour as possible definite make-up must be used courageously about "the windows of the soul," thus emphasizing the upper part of the face and com pensating for the comparative ob scurity of the mouth, which lacks the strong scarlet, pink and orange than has been used for the past 30 years. In line with this trend the fa mous old house of Harriet Hub bard Ayer, who was a beauty pi oncer in the Gay Nineties, has not only introduced a series of exquis ite "moonlight pale" lipsticks, but has created stunning new eye make-up, flattering, quick and easy to use, with sure-fire results. For instance, the old-fashioned way of brushing on mascara is abolished with Roll-O-Matic, a Har riet Hubbard Ayer device that rolls on mascara to coat the lashes heavily, while curling them up for the "starry-eyed" look that is so alluring. It comes in black, brown blue and green, with inexpensive refills to let you change accord ing to whim. This amazing new mascara invention puts the color on evenly with no slicking or mat ting, does not run, smear or have unpleasant odor, even lets you cry, if cry you must, without streak ing down your cheeks. And it goes on, literally, quick as a wink. In a nice, non-spillable, non-leak- able case, you can carry in a h.indbag. Then, for eye-shadow, Harriet Hubbard Ayer does away with the troublesome finger-tip method by putting it in a golden-cased stick form, making it as safe to carry and easy to apply as a lipstick. Solid Jade and Sapphire, iridescent Amethyst, Turquoise and Blue Dia mond Frost are available, and you may have fun using them in the new two-toned effect. For instance, using solid Sapphire over the en tire eyelid, but the rest of the area above the eyes, and well out be yond on the outer edges, blended in with Amethyst or Blue Diamond or even Jade. The entire shape of the eye can be apparently changed by judicious use ot shadow. Next, the new Ayer eyebrow pen cil which is self-sharpening, auto matic and, like all these other new items, cased smartly and com pactly, to be handy in a handbag. This is not mereiy an eyebrow pencil, but a lid-liner, 'its consis tency just the right blend of firm ness and softness. It comes in two shades of brown, black, auburn, gray and blue. Use it to make the short, sharp lines of the modern not-so-thin eyebrows, and also to outline the lids just above the lashes. Carrying tnis line under the eye and out beyond gives the so-called "doe-eyed look" liked by models and actresses. Incidentally, this effect, done very heavily, was first introduced by famous balle rina of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, before World War II, and combined with their heavily beaded lashes, added immensely to the exotic look of such stars as Tou manova and Baronova. However, heavy mascara or lid-lining below the eyes is only for the young. It can make an older woman look haggard and more than her age. Many women, by the way, do not realize the possibilities of gray eye brow pencil. This is not merely for older women, but has a softening look becoming to blondes. Also, for evening, the woman who uses blue Koll-U-Matic and eye-shadow may well add blue eyebrow pencil for a really exciting result. On the whole, these new creations by Harriet Hubbard Ayer present fascinating possibilities for experiment, for this season you must dramatize your eyes to make up for under- emphasis on your tips, otnerwise you will seem really old-fashioned, something Mrs. Ayer abhorred. When she wrote her famous books and newspaper columns on beauty she fearlessly advocated "anything that makes a woman more attrac tive and is in the fashion" at a time when anything more exciting than a touch of rice powder was considered quite wicked.
