'UPI'-A one-time insurance salesman who may be professional golf's No. 1 exponent of "the power of posi tive thinking" opened defense of his crown today in the 72-hole Ilth annual Azalea Open tourna ment. Bell, who has been playing center for the Reds, had an off season in 1958. hitting only .252. while Ennis. with the Cardinals batted only .261. "But I know they are better hitters than that." Smith con tended. Back of those four are Pete Whisenant, whom Smith says "can hit the hell out of left handed pitching." and Bob Thur man. Thurman. however, could !lose out to John Powers, who hit only ,183 for the Pirates last year but who has looked good this spring. "I know it sounds trite, but let me sum it up this way." A year ago he was hobbled by a had right knee, still weak trom an operation to patch up the dam age of a fielding crash with Felix Mantilla in midseason of 1957. ' I was worried plenty." Bruton said "1 didn t know if the knee would come around at all It was not fear, exactly, but I had plenty of doubt." The opeiation in which a lorn ligament was stretched back into place and left to grow back on the bone naturally was performed in October 1937. while the Braves were winning the World Series from the New York Yankee. Bru ton had been on the disabled list jsince July. In March, a year ago. Bruton j showed up for spring practice, limited to running.
