Ilth annual Azalea Open tourna
ment. But young Howie .Johnson of
San Marcos. Calif., should have a
task on his hands heating a jinx,
118 other eager golfers and the
rugged fi.651-yard par 3R-3S72
Cape Fear Country Club course.
At stake will be $15,000 in prize
money, including $2,000 to the
winner.
The jinx is that no winner of
the Azalea Open has ever man
aged to repeat. Other past Aza
lea winners who were back on
hand for another try were Billy
.Maxwell (19551, Bob Toski '1954'.
Jerry Barber '1953' and Mike
Souchak '19561.
Souchak is regarded as a lop
threat. Big Mike managed a tie
with Arnold Palmer for the $10.

at Palm Beach, Fla.. this week.
Palmer forced Johnson into a
playoff for the Azalea title last
year, just six days before Palmer
';on the coveted Augusta Masters
crown. Palmer elected to pass up
the Azalea event this year to con

said of Pinson, "He has things
to learn in the field but right
now I'd have to rate him a better
prospect than Richie Ashburn was
at the same stage of his career. "
Smith was fired as manager of
the Phillies late last season.
"I'm not feeling bitter when I
say that." he went on, " I'm just
saying how I honestly feel."
Bell, who has been playing
center for the Reds, had an off
season in 1958. hitting only .252.
while Ennis. with the Cardinals
batted only .261.
"But I know they are better
hitters than that." Smith con
tended. Back of those four are Pete
Whisenant, whom Smith says
"can hit the hell out of left
handed pitching." and Bob Thur
man. Thurman. however, could
!lose out to John Powers, who hit
only ,183 for the Pirates last year
but who has looked good this
spring.
"I know it sounds trite, but let
me sum it up this way." Smith
concluded. "We'll go as far as
our pitching takes us We have
all the other horses."

would come around at all It was
not fear, exactly, but I had plenty
of doubt."

in October 1937. while the Braves
were winning the World Series
from the New York Yankee. Bru
ton had been on the disabled list

In March, a year ago. Bruton
j showed up for spring practice,
limited to running. He could run
j only in a straight line, no pivot
ing, no culling
"That was the tough part." he
said Just to keep off the leg
1 couldn't hit. I couldn't field 1
wouldn't even get into a pepper

And all the time I was com
ing along on schedule The doc
had decided 1 wouldn t do any
heavy work for six months after
the operation. But he didn't tell
me about that
"1 finally was able to hat again

The slim. 6 footer, now 29, say
the leg gave him some trouble
in the outfield
