The new Call Air plane was delivered to the two men in Jan uary of this year at the Afton. Wyoming, factory. While the local men may not go along entirely with the above statement, they can state that whereas 100 acres were once re garded as the minimum, fields of five acres are now routinely aprayed by air, and one acre pieces are also done frequently The new bright vcllow plane with the wing tips of red is a far cry from the ground rigs that Ortwein started with 13 years ago in Lake County. He quickly found that he couldn't keep up with the demand for spray services both in and out of Lakeview. so. four years ago he invested in a spray plane. This ran in'.o bad luck last spring and crashed while doing a job on the Westside. Hon nold. who for three years was an instructor for the government in aircraft in a civilian capacity in Texas, has a special commercial license, and he went in with Ort wein the purchase and operation of the new Call-Air. which they claim is the last word in operation efficiency and safety. The plane is fully equipped for dusting, spraying and seeding. It .ilso has a quick dump valve that can unload 110 gallons in three seconds, and thus qualifies for efficient use in fire control. In demonstrating its capabilities in agricultural work, the plane is slower and can carry more weight in high altitudes. It operates .heaper and makes a better pat tern for spray work. Ortwein ays, and can aiso carry two pas sengers, which makes it better for fire patrol, or for such use as range inspection by stockgrowers. The visibility and economy are greater and the penetration is deeper, thus setting it up a a logical means for seeding opera- UUN.V "The economy of operation was a big factor in influencing us to buy this particular type of agri cultural aircraft," Ortwein stated, "as we are trying to hold charges down so that the farmer can come out ahead on the job." Ortwein stil! maintains his ground rip far which there is con stant demand in season In keep ing with the old axiom of giving a busy person a job to do. he heads the Jeep Posse in the Civil De fense program $f the county and has given many tree hours ot nis ume in searching for lost persons or criminals on the loose.
