Keith Glennan, U.S. space chief, startled a staid dinner meeting of the Institute of Aer onautical Sciences with this dis closure Tuesday night. The new federal space agency. he said, has picked 110 rugged oung Americans as candidates for the first manned satellite to orbit the earth. They will assemble in Washing ton for further tests, Glennan said, and be asked to volunteer for space flight. Within three months, their ranks will be re duced to about a dozen. "I suspect that the one who will make the flight will not know he is to do so until count-down day he added. Beck Relative Asks Excuse TACOMA, Wash. (API A relative by marriage of Dave Beck, Norman Gessert, has asked that he be excused from testilying in the former Teamsters Union president s income tax evasion trial. Gessert, a nephew by marriage of Mis. Beck, filed a motion lues day asking that the subpoena against him and his wife be quashed. His counsel argued that Gessert is a defendant in a con spiracy trial in connection with Beck's case, and is still to be tried. The motion also asked that the document served on Mrs. Gessert be quashed because it would vio late the rule which does not per mit a wile to testify against her husband. Beck is charged with evading $240,000 in income taxes in 1950-53. Beck's defense attorney, Charles Burdcll, indicated he would fight Gessert's move, which shows an apparent split in the defense ranks for the first time. The government had made and then temporarily halted an at tempt to have Mrs. Gessert testi fy. Its case is nearly completed. The trial began Nov. 10. it will be reduced to the point a pilot faces in testing a new plane. "Ve are not going to cut any corners which would put the young man in jeopardy, he said. He refused to predict when America's human space flight will take place. The expectation is. however, that such a flight is about two years away. The National Aeronautic and Space Administration which Glen nan heads, announced two weeks aso the selection of McDonnell Aircralt Corp , St. Louis, to de sign, develop, and build the Pro ject Mercury capsule. "The Russians have been at it somewhat longer than we have, and it is wholly possible they will beat us into space," Glennan told newsmen later. The 110 potential American space pioneers were not listed by name. Glennan gave these quali lications ol the man who finally will be selected: 1. A university degree in physi cal science or engineering. 2. A graduate of an Air Force or Navy test-pilot training school with at least 1,500 flying hours. 3. Superb condition, with the physical and psychological attri butes suited for space llight as determined by aero-medical sci entists. 4. Younger than 40 and no taller than 5 feet 11. There are no weight restrictions. On the last point, the slockily built Glennan smiled and told newsmen: "I'd like to qualify myself."
