Beck Relative
Asks Excuse

relative by marriage of Dave
Beck, Norman Gessert, has asked
that he be excused from testilying
in the former Teamsters Union
president s income tax evasion
trial.
Gessert, a nephew by marriage
of Mis. Beck, filed a motion lues
day asking that the subpoena
against him and his wife be
quashed. His counsel argued that
Gessert is a defendant in a con
spiracy trial in connection with
Beck's case, and is still to be
tried.
The motion also asked that the
document served on Mrs. Gessert
be quashed because it would vio
late the rule which does not per
mit a wile to testify against her
husband. Beck is charged with
evading $240,000 in income taxes
in 1950-53.
Beck's defense attorney, Charles
Burdcll, indicated he would fight
Gessert's move, which shows an
apparent split in the defense
ranks for the first time.
The government had made and
then temporarily halted an at
tempt to have Mrs. Gessert testi
fy. Its case is nearly completed.
The trial began Nov. 10.

space pioneers were not listed by

1. A university degree in physi
cal science or engineering.
2. A graduate of an Air Force
or Navy test-pilot training school
with at least 1,500 flying hours.
3. Superb condition, with the
physical and psychological attri
butes suited for space llight as
determined by aero-medical sci
entists.
4. Younger than 40 and no taller
than 5 feet 11. There are no
weight restrictions.
On the last point, the slockily
built Glennan smiled and told
newsmen: "I'd like to qualify myself."
Candidates for manned space
flight will be known as Mercury
astronauts. The United States'
manned satellite program is
known as Project Mercury.
Glennan said the element of risk
cannot be completely removed but
