It is a member of a rathe' large plant family known as th mustard family, the herbage ol which has a characteristic pun gent or peppery taste. . The plant is a native of Euro and probably came to us in im ported alfalfa seed before th days when such imports wre closely inspected. Seeds somewhat resemble alfalfa seeds as to size and shape am no aouot are oiten carried as an impurity in such seeds. White top develops an extensive underground system of roots whic may go as deep as 30 feet, with numerous lateral roots extending in all directions from the tao roots. Because of this it is possible to find ripe seeds in first cutting alfalfa, this could be the chief means of spreading the weed Farming operations also spread Ihe weed. Once established the weed takes complete possession of the area to the exclusion of most other plant especially crop plants. Yields and quality of crops are affected. White top was once considered the worst weed in the county an;l had much influence in setting up tne county weed control district Before the introduction of 4-D no reliable chemical con trol was available and cultural control methods had to be carried out in a diligent manner to be successful. Wilh the event o' 2, 4-D, , however, much mor progress has been made in con- olling and eradicating this weed. Ithough there are sizable infesta tions remaining within the county it is quite possible that wilh prop er use of this chemical to even tually rid the land of this pest. Although a single application or 2, 4-D seldom results in more than a 75 to 80 per cent kill the first year, when properly followed oy spraying regrowth the next year or two the desired results can be had. Proper timing and dosage have considerable influence on results. Solutions should contain more 2. 4-D than is ordinarily used fo- selective spraying and plan's should be thoroughly wet with the spray. Use of a wetting agent in the spray solution aids in absorption of the chemical by tne plants. Good results have been obtained with the use of amine formula tions of 2. 4-D at the rale of thre quarts (three lbs. acid I per 100 gallons ol water plus a wetting agent and sprayed after full bloom when petals begin to drop. If pos- sime, spray patches from more than one angle as this tends to wet plants more thoroughly. From one to three gallons of solution is needed for each square rod of weeds, depending on density and growth of plants. When the lawmakers went home Friday for the weekend, they al ready had begun consideration of their three major problems fi nance, reorganization and unem ployment compensation. With a smoothly running Demo cratic organization, the legislat ors are determined to get their business done as quickly as pos sible. Many of them have bitter memories of their own time and money spent in Ihe record 128- day session of 1957. The House Taxation Committee is proceeding so rapidly on Demo iratic former Gov. Robert D Holmes' tax program that Repub lican Gov. Mark Hatfield who idrmd he II be too late. The committee is holding a hearing on the Holmes program Monday afternoon, and it should go to the House floor for action few days later. The main parts of the program to raise 137 million dollars are lo abolish installment pay ments for income taxes, boost the tax on utilities, slightly reduce in come tax rates, and eliminate the federal income tax deduction The Joint Ways and Means Committee is already hearing testimony by state agencies in support of their budget requests This never happened so soon be fore, either. The House State and Federal Affairs Committee will meet Mon day to consider an interim com mittee's plans to let the governor reorganize Ihe state government pngftat ky Ara governor would be subject to veto by the Legislature. Get into the back of the store and nobody will get hurt, the gun man said. Two henchnien moved in behind him. Tellalian led Ihe trio past two clerks inlo a rear office where the store's safe is kept. "Open it," the bandit leader growled. Tellalian, understandably nerv ous, lumbled at the dials. laK it easy," the gunman said, "take your time." After 10 minutes, the manager was calm enough to work the com bination. The safe contained $4,000 in coins and $10,000 in bills.
