March 16 Th Cascade Limited jumped the track between Crescent Lake and Chemult. Twelve to 14 can derailed, and while 49 passengers were in u re d , 14 serious- , M ly, there were no deaths. 2. February 20 Flames destroyed two large storage sheds and finished lumber at Car-Ad-Co Lumber Com pany in Pelican City with an estimated loss of $350,000. Fire crews from all parts of the county fought the blaie. 3. May 5 Voters turned down both the KUHS and the city elementary school budgets for the first time since the I920's. KUHS vote 847 to 686, and elementary 896 to 644. Both budgets were later approved after they had been trimmed slightly. The vote was a record turnout for school elections. 4. February 27 Maj. Gen. Hugh A. Parker, 'West Coast Air Defense commander, Hamilton Field, Cali fornia, turns over first shovel of dirt for construction of 290 Capehart Title VIII family housing units near Kingsley Field. Total cost over $4,500,000. First home was oc cupied in December. , 5. March 22 KUHS Pelicans won the State Class A basketball title defeating Grant of Portland 52 to 46 in the finals. They marched to the finals with a 70-62 victory J&P .At, over Beaverton, 56 to 42 over Roosevelt of Portland, and .A-Sitfw 66-52 over Franklin of Portland. Here, first team all-state Glenn Moore goes up for a Pelican basket. Bob Petersen and Dave Robinson were named to the second all-state team. 6. April 29-30 Three OTI instructors were asphyxiated in a madeover bus while on a fishing trip near the Little Deschutes fjiver. Dead were John C. Roman, 47; George A. Harper Jr., 39, and Ray Perkey, 49. 7. April 23 Four men, left to right, Dinsmore Taylor i and T. B. Watters, management specialists; Oiek ropp, assistant forester, and Don C. June 11 Circuit court trial of city policeman John tfll v. :-; Wilson ended surprisingly when Clyde Cloud, man who charged Wilson beat him, was 35 minutes late to testify and his story didn't jibe with the court clocks. The charge against Wilson, shown here with his attorney E. E. Driscoll, was dismissed. First trial date in January ended when Wil son's attorney, Ben Goddard, died. 9. April 10 Orville Hamilton, Klamath Falls police chief for 14 years and member of the department since 1937, resigned following criticism of the department by the Klamath County Grand Jury and a subsequent survey re port by Inspector Richard Young of the Berkeley, Cali fornia, police department.
