"Kor anyone to create any thing artistic, he must have lived it." The words came ' slowly from William G. Gates as he explained that his artistic goal is a novel with prison life as its background. Gates was silling in the Seattle Cily Jail. He literally had asked lo go to prison, choosing forgery as his passport. Dot. T. C. Jorgensen of the Seat lie police check detail arrested Gales, 27, Wednesday afternoon. Gates quickly admitted in a signed statement he was the forger of about $100 in bum checks. Talking with reporters, Gates said he calculated the amount he obtained through the worthless checks would get him about a year in the penitentiary, that's the tune he says he needs to complete his education and get the necessary background for his novel. Gates said he felt that forgery was the least harmful way to get to prison. It doesn't cause anyone physi cal pain," he said, "and those to whom I dropped the checks could well atford it." Gates graduated from Yakima (Wash.) Valley Junior College and spent a year studying psychology at the University of Washington. He said he ha,d been planning his move for years. '.' "I first became interested in juvenile delinquency when I was ibout 16, he said. 1 made a study of it until about two years ;igo when I began to try and un derstand the emotions of prison ers and the reactions of convicts who are paroled. "They have about the hardest deal of anyone when they leave prison and again try to find a job. I want to write about them., and I want to know how they feel." when Jorgensen got up to leave a broad smile came to Gates face. "it was sure nice seeing you," he said. U.S. Forest Service Chief Seeks Full Allowable Cut .asoment, who said a larger cut may be allowed soon million acres of O&C land in West ern Oregon. PORTLAND (AP) The chief of the U.S. Forest Service Wednes day said Northwest lumber firms need the full allowable cut from the region's federal forests. "We want a sales program that will produce this cut," Richard McArdle told the closing session of the Pacific Logging Congress here. "The Forest Service recognizes that the Pacific Coast and Inland Empire forest produce industries Chief Clerk To Retire PORTLAND (AP)-Zylpha Zell Burns Wednesday said she is re tiring as chief clerk of the Oregon Senate a post she has held since 193(1. "Now that I have rounded out 20 years as chief clerk, I think this is a good time for retire ment," she said. Mrs. Burns said she will be glad to help her replacement break into the job when the next Legislature convenes in 1039. Mrs. Burns is a Republican, and since 195f has been chief clerk of the Multnomah County probate department. now need the full allowable cut from practically every forest." But McArdle warned: "We won't make sales or the volume cut an overriding aim. "Our objective is to make a series of soundly planned and soundly logged sales up to allow able cut rate. Poorly handled sales resulting in erosion or un stocked cutover are worse than an undercut," he said. For" a year or more, many firms have been saying that the federal government should offer more timber for sale. McArdle said, however, that lumber companies must adhere lo the multiple use theory in the face of increasing demands for more recreation area. If they don't, he said, public opinion may force vast areas out of the reach of commercial usage. Later, the congress said in a resolution that it was opposed to a wilderness bill now pending in the Senate. That bill, the congress said, would bar commercial usage of vast areas and stunt the west's economic growth.
