(API It's hard for Navajos to under stand the difference between the Republican and Democratic parties. So -Mrs. Annie Wauncka, a mem ber of the Navajo Tribal council, decided to simplify her political teaching by using the party sym bolsthe Democratic donkey and the GOP elephant. But, she said, this procedure gave the Democrats a big edge with the Navajos. Navajos much preferred the donkey because donkeys are good workers "and you could eat the young ones." One the other hand, the Navajos had seen elephants only at circuses "and even then their hides were repulsive." Pretzel Man Lauds Snack PHILADELPHIA (AP)-The lat est twist in the pretzel industry is i the push to get the pretzel out of ! the saloon into the salon the re- ducing salon, that is. "The pretzel is a. low calorie, high protein diet, item, said Donald McCollough, Lancaster. Pa., pretzel maker today. "Won derful way to fill your stomach without adding pounds. "Let's face it. In the old days, the pretzel was strictly for beer drinkers. It's no longer a barroom Item. It's a family snack. Why, around Lancaster, doctors prescribe pretzels and ginger ale lor babies with upset stomaens. McCollough was elected to a second term Thursday as presi dent of the National Pretzel Bak ers Institute at its lRlh annual convention. McCollough figures there's go ing to be a boom in pretzels if they catch on with folks trying to reduce. "It's a hundred million dollar a year business." he said. "But it'll be up to between three and five hundred million dollars in the next five years. Why, business has in creased 25 per cent in the last five years." Pretzel makers arc trying to gel hotels to put pretzels on their din ing room tables, next to the bread and cracker baskets. "They're great with tomato soup," said McCollough. "But number one item among the new uses for pretzels is pretzel pie crust. Crumble them up, use it to top a pie. Great." MONTAGUE New telephone numbers with improved dial serv ice for subscribers in Montague and surrounding communities, en compassing an area of some 400 square miles, came about when the newly installed telephone dial central office went into action at 12 noon on Friday. The new system carrying some 300 lines, was installed in the newly constructed building located at Twelfth and Webb streets Montague, under the supervision of Edwin T. Aschow of Sacra mento, supervisoi with the West ern Electric Company, and Frank Nugent, senior wire chief of the Yreka office of the PT and T Com pany. Construction of the building to house the new equipment was com pleted in December, and installa tion of equipment was started July 30. One interesting feature, pointed out by Nigent, the carriers which are designed solely for rural areas. The carrier, as explained by Floyd Dill, manager of the Yreka telephone office, is a hi- frequency radio, entirely transis torized, and superimposed over a pair of wires that serves 40 fam ilies. There are five such chan nels for the Montague office, which will handle service in Little ohas- Big Springs, Beswick and Wil low Creek. Dill said "If it wasn't for the carriers it would be almost im possible to give service to all out lying areas." Nugent stated that this new carrier is .the first of type to be installed In Northern California, and as far as he knew there were only three of the sys tems in all of California.
