At any rate, Hackett Joined Gleason for three days recently to discuss the new show. "We played golf for three days," said Hackett, "and we talked golf for three days. As I was coming away, Jackie said, 'The more laughs you get on the (how the better I'll like it. I ad mire you most because you're a good actor.' "And I'd like to say I admire Gleason most because he's the only comedian in the country who's funnier than I am and who'd have the nerve to hire me as sec ond man. . "When you're playing second man, you've got to discipline yourself and not appear to the audience that you're stealing lines." One thing Hackett would like to get straight now is that it's "pre ordained" he'll be with Gleason only one season 24 half-hour va riety shows with the option of eight more. The year after this, if Gleason returns to television, "I don't want people asking what hap pened to Hackett," Hackett (aid. "Because I can tell you right now that Hackett will be in Europe doing a filmed series for televi sion about an 'American photog rapher."
