Only Thing Certain About
TV Show Is Jackie Gleason
NEW YORK (AP) There arc
many rumors about plans for the
Jackie Gleason Show when it be
gins on CBS-TV Oct. 3, but the
only solid information is that
Gleason will be on it and so will
Buddy Hackett.
Hackett was talking the other
day to a fellow who's been tele
phoning Gleason at a Peekskill.
N. V., number and never getting
an answer. v
"He's not there," said Hackett,
but if he was he still couldn t
answer. That phone is just a bell
up on top of a telephone pole.
At any rate, Hackett Joined
Gleason for three days recently
to discuss the new show.
"We played golf for three
days," said Hackett, "and we
talked golf for three days. As I
was coming away, Jackie said,
'The more laughs you get on the
(how the better I'll like it. I ad
mire you most because you're a
good actor.'
"And I'd like to say I admire
Gleason most because he's the
only comedian in the country
who's funnier than I am and who'd
have the nerve to hire me as sec
ond man.
. "When you're playing second
man, you've got to discipline
yourself and not appear to the
audience that you're stealing
lines."
One thing Hackett would like to
get straight now is that it's "pre
ordained" he'll be with Gleason
only one season 24 half-hour va
riety shows with the option of
eight more.
The year after this, if Gleason
returns to television, "I don't
want people asking what hap
pened to Hackett," Hackett (aid.
"Because I can tell you right now
that Hackett will be in Europe
doing a filmed series for televi
sion about an 'American photog
rapher." His Name Is
Stanley, But It
Could Be Dennis
PHILADELPHIA (AP)-Three-year-old
Stanley Henes, wearing
boxer shorts, moccasins and a big
smile, left home yesterday.
Though he didn't ,have any
money, he got on the subway
elevated line from his home in the
Kensington section and went for a
joyride clear to the end of tha line
at suburban Upper Darby, a trip
of several miles. On the way
back he stopped off at City Hall to
check up on things there.
Then he started home.
Meanwhile, his frantic mother.
who had parked him in the family
yard to' play, notified police. They
looked high and low, but they
never thought of the el.
Stanley, on his way home, fell
into conversation with a couple
of older men say IS or 16 years
of age who found out his name
and notified the police.
Officers returned him to his
worried family, tired- and more
than a little dirty.
In one grimy -little . fist, he
clutched 30 cents representing
a clear profit for the day's ac
tivities.
He didn't say where the money
came from.

General Sets
South Tour
PARIS (AP) Premier de
Gaulle flew south today on a tour
of French African territories to
drum up votes for his new con
stitution in the Sept. 28 referen
dum.
The general's first destination
was Madagascar, an Indian Ocean
island off Africa that is larger
than France. Then he will visit
Brazzaville, Equatorial Africa,
where he pledged local self-government
to French colonies in a
World War II speech as leader
of the Free French; Abidjan,
Conakry and Dakar, in West Af
rica; and rebellion-torn Algeria.
In the relerendum the people of
these territories will vote on an
equal basis with Frenchmen for
the first time.
De Gaulle favors letting the
territories choose between full in
tegration into the French govern
ment structure or loose federa
tion, but his Cabinet reportedly
has abandoned the idea of federa
tion. However, talks the Premier
has with local leaders on his trip
are expected to have considerable
bearing on his future plans for
France s overseas possessions.
De Gaulle is scheduled to re
turn to Paris at the end of the
month. Vice Premier Guy Mollet
is in charge during his absence.

Refuse Offer
MEDIA, Pa. (AP) Delaware
County has been offered all the
garbage and refuse it can burn.
Gregorio Vassiliev, Russian-born
industrial engineer in Buenos
Aires, offered to round up tons of
South American garbage as incin

vassiliev, who said in his letter
that he can speak eight langu-
guages, apparently misread the
county's advertising, Clearance L.
Conner, head of the county dis
posal department, said.
His letter came in answer to
an ad for a superintendent for the
county's three planned incinera
tors, which will cost, six million
dollars. Vassiliev said he could
line up Argentina's refuse supply
plus millions of tons more from
other South American countries.
'I m going to decline his offer
immediately," said Conner, "be
fore he shows up here with a
string of garbage scows."

Morse Tells
Views On Bill
WASHINGTON (AP) Sen.
Wayne Morse (D-Ore) says he is
opposed to a bill which would al
low counties greater latitude in
spending money received from
timber sales in National forests.
Morse Wednesday asked the Se
nate Agriculture Committee to
hold hearings on the measure-
already passed by the House.
The present law restricts the
use. of funds to roads and schools
The new bill would permif the
money to be spent for general
government purposes.
Counties currently receive 25
per cent of gross receipts from
timber sold in national forests
embraced by the counties.
The original limitation res
tricting expenditures of these
hinds for roads and schools was
designed to protect two of the
most important features of local
government, Morse said in re
questing the hearing.

set, and Us just-published sequel,
"Holiday for Edith and the
Bears."
The heroine of both books is a
doll, which Miss Wright named for
her mother, Edith Stevenson
Wright, the portrait artist and
widow of Ivan Leonard Wright,
once the drama critic on the To
ronto Star.
"Edith" is much like dolls cher
ished by other small girls any
where, until Miss Wright turns her
camera on its tiny form, little girl
face and long mop of straight
blonde hair. Then she becomes an
imated and gets into all (orU of
scrapes.
Miss Wright believes she is the
first to try photographic anima
tion of Inanimate objects for chil
dren's books. She explained, in an
interview, she got the doll for her
seventh birthday. It was once a
favorite toy, but as she grew up
in Cleveland, Edith ended up in
attic storage.
Dare came to New. York to try
acting and said she didn't do too
badly "I had some small parts
and some good understudy jobs on
Broadway, but they weren't
enough to pay the rent.
So she turned to modeling and
her face and clothes-horse figure
graced many slick fashion mag
azines. At the same- tune, man
nequin Wright began picking up
camera know-how.
By this time. Miss Wright was
settled in a large, one-room studio
apartment in New York and de
cided it was time to ship some
things trom home.
"1 unpacked one truck and there
was hdith among all the books,
said the author. "I dusted her off.
made her a wig out of a false
chignon I had, and started her
sitting for the camera."
Two stuffed toy bears are
Edith's companions in the second
book chosen "for their photo
genic qualities," said the author.
"We looked at 50 or so before we
found the right ones."
Judith now has another doll com
panion, Lona, a fancily dressed
one from Paris and the probable
heroine of a new fairy princess
story.
