OREGON Sunday, august 10, i958 BOYS' WEAR SPARKS' BRIG Keep This Spot Cleaning List Handy The younger sets' togs probahly present the biggest single home laundry problem with an abun dance of upols and stains ranging from ink blots to blood and chew ing gum. The Maytag Company's Product Testing Laboratory, now engaged In research on the proper laun dry care of synthetic fabrics, rec ommends the following treatment for typical spots and stains. Greasy crayons and oil stains: on Dacron, lightly rub liquid de tergent on with the back of a spoon or an old toothbrush. For other modern fabrics and wash able wool, sponge with spot re mover, working from outside of spot to center. "Finger-painted" cottons and linens: wash in warm or hot. sudsy water after scraping off as much paint as possible. Use plenty of detergent on the stained area end rub well between the hands. In washing the synthetics, how ever, it is recommended that au tomatic cold water wash and a "wash 'n' wear" dryer setting be used for wrinkle-frec results that need little or no ironing. Ink spots: sponge on synthetics and washable wool with alcohol then bleach with lemon juice. For cotton and linen, pour soapless shampoo on the stain, rub light ly and rinse. If stain remains, bleach with hydrosulphite or ox alic acid and rinse well. Indelible pencil marks: on any fabric,, soak in alcohol, then sponge with soap and water. Note If the garment is acetate, use only diluted alcohol 'two parts wa ter to one part alcohol) for spong ing. Chocolate or cocoa: sponge with i spot remover if the fabric is synthetic or wool. Wash cottons and linens in hot, sudsy water Sponge with hydrogen peroxide for stubborn stains. Milk or cream spots: in mod ern fabrics and wool, spongo with a spot remover. In cotton and linen, sponge with cold or luke warm water then wash in suds. Fruit stains: for modern fah rics and wool, sponge well in cold water and work glycerine into the stain. Do not use soap. Let the garment stand for several hours, then add a few drops of white vinegar and rinse thoroughly. Use the same cold water, detergent wash methods prescribed above The cold water, glycerine, no soap pretrcatment should be used lor cottons and linens with peach. pear, cherry or plum stains. For all other fruit stains in natural fibers, stretch the cloth over a bowl and pour boiling water on the stain. If traces remain, use lemon juice or ono of the chem ical bleaches. Grass stains: on synthetic fabrics or washable wool, sponge with al cohol. Again, dilute the alcohol for acetate garments. Natural fabrics may be rubbed with hot. sudsy water: use bleach if the stain remains after laundering. Mud: dry thoroughly, then brush well and sponge with cold wa ter. If the stain persists in mod ern fabrics or washable wool, sponge with a solution of two parts water to one part alcohol Cottons and linens may be sponged wilh cold water and washed In hot. sudsy w,?ter, then sponged with alcohol if necessary. Blood stained fabric: sponge with cold water. If further prctreating is necessary, use hydrogen perox ide for synthetics and wool, weak nmmonia water for cottons and linens. Chewing gum and adhesive tape: spongo the mark with spot re mover, then launder according to fabric requirements. ' .v BVi J I . Hi ho! it's off to scliool we go!" the young man of the family sings as he buttons up his new fall outfit and marches off briskly to the halls or learning. Yes, it's back-to-school time, and our young fellow should be happy! The weather is still half summer half fall; the days are still long enough to give him plenty of play hours after school! When a young man meets his friends after school for play he'll certainly feel at home in one of the new, warm all-wool bulky knit sweaters. They're wonderful for freedom of action and this fall they've been styled in many bright, bold style treatments that boys like. If you want to give him some thing very stylish to wear, try the white bulky knit, with color trim. This is a big season for white in sweaters. Consider, too, a sweater with one of the new shawl collars that either lie flat or snap up to hug the neck. New, Comfy Coats When the weather gets very cold he should have a rugged wool fingertip-length coat to wear over his sweater. This length is good for playing because it doesn't hamper the boy, yet is long enough to protect him from the frigid winds. Hoods Are Good! Many of this fall's new coat styles have wool blanket linings for extra warmth: some have re movable hoods. Boys like hoods They attach with either zipper or buttons and keep the head nice and warm. They also don't get lost as easily as hats. An other thing they like is the snap- up bulky knit shawl cellar on coals. For the boys who like to keep sweaters on in class, the thing to get him is one of the new lighter weight wool sweaters. The pullover is best here, es pecially in the neutral colors like navy or natural. They go well with other colors that the boy is wearing. The boy who is sensitive to fashion will ''get pretty excited, too, about one of the new low-button cardigans with the long V-opening. This low-button model has been the biggest thing in sweaters this past year, and it is very attrac tive in a solid color with a har monizing trim, like a natural col or sweater with a brown-edging. These are sometimes called "pro coats" because the professional athletes wear them. Smart Sport Coats There are many occasions for which the young fellow must have an all-wool tweed or Shet land sports jacket, one in correct "Ivy" style three buttons, nat ural shoulders, narrow lapels, center vent, and flaps on the pockets. With one of these he's all set for his dance date or a disc par ty, ii you want to see mm really look sharp, get him one of the' traditional blue wool flannel blaz ers with saucy brass buttons. Worn with gray flannel slacks, a crisp white shirt and a snappy tie. your boy will look like some thing out of the pages of the best fashion magazine. For 'Sunday Best' Come Sunday, there is an old American custom that is receiv ing greater emphasis these days the Sunday suit. Boys learn by impressions, and if a boy wears the same thing on Saturday or any other day, well, it probably doesn't feel like Sunday to him. But dress him in a "Sunday suit" an honest-tn-goodness suit with matching jacket' and panti and he suddenly knows that there's something special about Sunday. He gets the meaning. For many occasions weddings, formal piano recitals, and the lika only the suit is proper for wear. For these occasions the wool flannel suit or the wool tweed in his choice "Ivy" styling, no doubt, are right for the fall weather. Sunday suit, Sunday be havior, they say. And just watch him be the gentleman! NEWEST ADDITION to the county scnool system will be Crest School which is ex pected to be ready for occupancy about November I. The school is being built at an estimated cost of $300,000. It is expected that soma 300 students will be reassigned to Crest School from Altamont and Peterson schools. Susan B. Educational research has discov ered that ordinarily the reason is not the child s poor moral back ground or education. Rather it is due to the situation in which the youngster is placed. The attitude ot the teacher, the atmosphere of the classroom and the morale of the group are all significant.
