OREGON PAGE 8-A Womer Given UF-RC Post Wilbur Womer, district mana ger at the local Social Security of fice, has been named division chairman for governmental agen cies in the 1958 United fund-Red Cross drive. Womer will appoint a chairman to head each of the five units falling within the gov ernmental category: Federal, state, county, city and miscella neous. "It is my aim to see that every person who rams his livelihood in government work is made aware of the tremendously impor tant role the United Fund-Red Cross is playing in the lives of esch of us in this community," Obituaries RUFF .Max Ruff. Eugene, retired SP conductor, died in San Francisco. August 5. He was the brother of A. W. Ruff, 914 Oak Street, Klam ath Falls, also an SP conductor. The funeral is tentatively set for Saturday, August 9. POSTAL RECEIPTS UP Postal receipts at the Klam ath Falls Post Office showed near- ' l.v a 13 per cent increase over the July, 1957, figures, Assistant rostmaster Harold Hicks reports. The 1958 figure was $27,474.82, while that of 1957 was $24,337.49. Hicks said that part of this in crease was probably accounted for by stamp purchases in anticipation of the higher postage rates which went into effect August 1. The June, 1958, figure of $24,4B4.25 showed a decrease of over three per cent from the 1957 figure. Womer said in commenting on his new appointment. Womer has been with the So cial Security Administration since 1939 and was annotated district manager of Klamath Falls in Oc tober, 1954. He has been active in community and civic affairs, and is currently serving as chairman of the Klamath Falls Federal CITY BRIEFS i - A " W. W. WOMER Credit Union. He is a member of the new Community Council, chairman of the VMCA roundup and superintendent of the First Methodist Church Sunday School program. Womer is married and the father of two children. Formosa (UPD The government reported Communist Mig-jet fighters deployed only 22 minutes Hying time from Presi dent Chiang Kai-shek capital to day. All Uunese Nationalist Mili tary forces were ordered the highest degree of alert.' The chief of the Nationalist staff made an emergency broadcast to Formosa and the Nationalist-held offshore islands urging all pre cautions against possible air at tacks by the Chinese Communist jets. Defense Ministry spokesman Adm. Liu Hoh-Tu said "All our armed forces have been ordered into the highest degree of alert." The Defense Ministry an nounced Tuesday night that super sonic Mig-!7s had moved into the closest possible attacking position to Formosa since the Nationalists were driver, off the China main land in 1949. SMALL FIRES The cily (ire department put out two small fires Tuesday afternoon. One, a fence fire at 221 North Spring Street, resulted in small damage. NOT 29 x 12 at in last night's advertisement for KORENIAN'S, 513 Main St. Crater Lake Visitors Up July travel figures for Craterl Lake National Parle were released this week by Jack Rroadbent, chief ranger at the park. During the month just past, 28,- 3 cars came to the park bring ing a total of 108.034 visitors. The number of visitors during July represents an increase of 7.4 per cent over last year and a de crease of 0.7. per cent from the 19.-ti figures. Cumulative totals for this year show 168.279 visitors to date, an increase of 3.7 per cent over last year and a decrease of 4.5 per cent from tft. Work is going forward on the new Standard Oil service station at park headquarters and the nearhy dormitory for Standard Oil employes, Broadbent said. The paving at the Annie Spring intersection and the paving of the utilities area is still at a standstill, however, he said. Crews were pulled off those Jobs on Sat- urflay, July 19. as the operating engineers' strike against members of Associated General Contractors spread throughout the state. Other construction work planned for the park under Mission 68 pro. gram includes letting of contracts for construction of a covered en tranceway to the administration building. The job requires consid erable concrete work. Broadbent indicated that the construction of rest room facilities at the Mazama campgrounds and the new entry station at Annie Spring will prob ably not be affected by the strike.
