His nerousness causes a rash, so he always takes some anti-rash pills before he goes on. Last week, he did just that. And sailed through the performance in great style, without the slight est sign of breaking out. When he went home, he discovered he'd tak en the wrong pills the ones he'd swallowed were sleeping pills, Maverick fans know that there are two Mavericks Bret and Bart played by James Garner and Jack Kelly, respectively. But what isn't so well known is that the two are interchangeable Jack Kelly, back in his old home town was talking about that unique feature. It seems the scripts are written without any reference to Bret or Bart it's just "Maverick." Then whichever of the actors is avail able that week gets the job: If there are references in the script to "my brother Bart," sayr it's easy enough to change it to my brother Bret if necessary. Sometimes the two Mavericks are working at the same time, as the producer tries to keep two companies going simultaneously. While the brothers are inter changeable, as noted, Kelly says the public has interpreted them differently. "Jim Garner." says Kelly, felt to be the older and have an older-brother protectiveness to ward me. Perhaps that's because he was there first -and is an inch or two taller than I am. But actu ally, I'm about a year older than him." Garner was the first. Maverick. But, in order to get enough films done, they had to shoot two at once and that meant another char acter was needed. They thought of having Maverick's father, uncle, cousin, good friend but finally settled onihe brother bit. And that was O.K. with Kelly, who "wanted the part so bad I could taste it." This is somewhat strange since he'd previously turned down several offers to do a western- series (what Hollywood actor hasn't, except perhaps Peter Lorre?) because he felt he wasn't the western type. "But Maverick really Isn't a western," he says. "The stories would be just as good if they were Madison Avenue gray - flannel -suiters." Kelly says the setting, as noted bv the show's prospectus, is sim ply given as "the 1870s." And Maverick Bret and Bart could turn ut '"anywhere from New York to San Francisco, and maybe one of these days we will. Sometimes the only chance to see how stars live is to wait until they put. their homes up for sale. Previews. Inc.. a national real es tate firm, comes up with an In triguing glimpse of Bing Crosby's private way of life with the dis closure that he s offering for sale (for 195,000) his bachelor retreat on Hayden Lake in Idaho. Pre sumably, he no longer needs a bachelor retreat. This little cottage, especially de signed for Bing in 1954. includes such niceties as living room drap eries (featuring musica' notes in loth Century style that Play out "When the Blue of the Night") and bedroom draperies in the same style, but with a different tune ("Home Sweet Home ). Included in the price are a cou ple of boats, a 'flock of built-in IV sets, some docks and all the furnishings. - Any takers? I Ever hear of a timid actor? Kevin McCarthy is a self - con fessed timid man. McCarthy, a fine Broadway actor who does some' Hollywood TV films from time to time (latest is the May 30 S c h 1 1 1 z Playhouse production, Lottery t or Ke venge ) even goes so far as to say that he wouldn't have become an actor if he weren t timid. "At the University of Minne sota," McCarthy says, "I was dared to go out for dramatics by a friend. Now a courageous man would simply say 'Nuts,' but a timid man has to prove his cour age. So I went out for dramatics, It wasn't exactly love at first sight, but more curiosity at first sight, Love came later." McCarthy can't understand how an actor ever got into his "middle class family." One of his brothers is a banker, another in the in surance business. But his sister and he "broke away." She went on to become a world - famous writer Mary McCarthy, author of such respected volumes as Mem ories Of a Catholic Girlhood." And Kevin, while not yet reaching his eminence, is highly regarded by the acting profession as one of the more competent young actors. He finds TV films ' fun much easier than the theater. You haven't got time to delve too deep ly into a character, so you act on your first impressions. Ana may be that's a good thing." 5:19 NBC Newt 5:30 Brave Eagle "Mask of ManltOu 6:00 Wagon Train 20 DB "Rut led tie Munroe Storv" 7:00 The Investigator Liva Color 8:00 rather Knows Beat 8:30 News Summary B:40 Philro P Lav house "The Inform er" Victor McLaglen, Preston Foster.
