HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON SUNDAY, JUNE 8, 1958 THE HOUSE OF THE WEEK PAGE 8 D Roofed Arcade Makes A Split Of This Ranch By JOHN O. B. WALLACE Complete separation of living and sleeping areas is achieved in this ranch house by a unique adap tation of the split level idea to a single level house. Instead of splitting the areas by ' the use of higher and lower levels, the split idea is carried out by a front-to-back arcade which slic es through the center of the house. The end result of the plan, de signed especially for the House of The Week series and designated XD, is a sharp division of activity and sleeping areas. The arcade, itself, is split into three parts a covered entry, an entry foyer and an outdoor living patio and all parts are sheltered by a roof. Architect Samuel Paul, who cre ated design X-8, got his inspiration for the underlying concept of this plan from a quotation of obscure . or unknown origin: "Neither shall their sleep be dis turbed nor their activity be cur toiled.", ' "This sums it up," Paul says, adding: , "One unit consists of rooms where work, dining, ' recreation, conversation and activity of one sort or another is going on. The activity in this area varies from noisy in the family room to sub dued sounds in the living room. "The other unit consists of sleep ing rooms where quiet and privacy are the prime requisites." Contrasting Use Of Space In his arrangement, the archi tect has made contrasting use of space within the two principal areas. An open plan prevails in the activity area, whereas the sleep ing area is enclosed by sharply '. defined walls. In the activity area, all five rooms flow into each other in a circle of open space. The circle starts at the entrance foyer, curves toward the living and dining rooms, then into the infor mal dining and family room, the TWmm ; ,, "&si;r.raiTrr! Statistics House of The Week design X 8 has eight rooms, 214 baths and foyer. The living area in cludes living room with attached outdoor living patio, dining room, informal dining family room, kitchen, coffee room and lavatory. Three bedrooms and two baths are in the sleeping area. The overall dimensions of the house are 36 by 61 feet. A minimum plot 80 by 100 feet is recommended. There are 1,732 sq. ft. in the living and sleeping areas. The covered en try has 90 sq. ft., the entry foyer 144 sq. ft., and the outdoor living patio 140 sq. ft. BACK OF THE CARPORT an room kitchen and the coffee room then back to the entrance foyer. The curve of the circle is broken occasionally by accordian parti tions. - , The dining room can be shut off from the informal dining-fam-ily room by one partition; the cof-. fee room can be. closed off from the entrance foyer by another par tition. Thus the partitions close off the work and noisy area from the for mal, quieter area. In the sleeping area, planned carefully for maximum -privacy, the master bedroom is secluded from all other bedrooms and from all parts of the house. A bank of closets on one wall creates a buffer between the out door living patio and the master bedroom. Another wall has stag gered studs for insulation to make it sound resistant. A bending bedroom hall likewise contributes to privacy no bed room door is visible from the en trance foyer, and the hall bath, artificially ventilated, has its en trance door concealed. . Glassed-in Entrance Foyer In the arcade, a covered entry leads to the glassed-in entry foyer. Here you can look through a glass wall to the outdoor living patio and beyond into a garden. The kitchen separates the fam ily and coffee rooms and a two way fireplace separates the living and dining rooms. Construction economics , are achieved by building the sleeping area over crawl space. The ar cade is slab on grade with slate flooring. A full basement is below the living area. Exterior details include a sim ple roof line, vertical wood sid ing with large window areas, and roof overhangs. Brick or stone may be substituted for the exterior if desired. Optional materials are possible for the roof; use either tabbed down asphalt shingles or built-up roofing with marble chip finish. d to the left of the entrance is the five-room living area. At the .right is the three-bed sleeping area. Dividing these main areas is a front-to-back central arcade. ' , carport . .jr I .f 1 II ro I 1 I I TR" : ' er-o" .
