TUESDAY. MAY 27. 1958 HERALD 'AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREOON PAGE 9 A. ays Can Hit .380 Says Boss WEST POINT. N. Y. (AP) Willie Mays is the type of base ball player who could bat .380. hit 50 home runs and drive in 140 runs. That is how much San Fran cisco Manager Bill Rigney thinks of his big man. "Willie is the best player I ever saw," Hieney said today. "I said in the spring he never had reached his potential. He might drive in 140. bat .M0 hit 50 homers and lead the league in everything. Does Rigney expect him to do just that? "I'll say this," he answered can't think of anybody who bas a better chance. Not even Stan Musial? Rigney chook his head. "Out . in San Francisco they ttarted to worry about Willie when had hit only one home run in our first 22 games although he was hitting over ..400'' he said. "We even got out the movie camera. "He gt)t a kick out of seeing himself in 1951. We saw a couple of things he was doing and he went back to the old thing. He crashes about eight in the next week." - Willie won't buy any predictions for himself. "I'm Just oft to a good start," he kept saying. "I never hit many home runs in May. Usually I m hitting about .250 at this time. I'm just happy I'm having a good year. When I hit home runs I get them in Duncncs ana men no more for a time." Mays admits the fast start of the club has surprised him just as it has surprised most of the baseball world. "Sure, I'm surprised," he said. "Nobody knew we would get four boys (Orlando Cepeda, Bob Schmidt, .lim Davenport and Wil lie Kirklandi all coming through like they are. They make a big difference. "With Cepeda and Daryl Spen cer hitting good right behind me it helps me too. That Orlando is a strong boy, hits both ways (right and left field). He is the most relaxed first year man ever saw. If he don't win the rookie of the year prize, he's got to go real bad. Can the Giants win it. all? "That's for the manager to say, not me," says Mays "I just hope we can win every game every day. Everybody is happy. It's just like 1951 when we were winning everyday. And the Dodgers? Are they as bad as they have looked? "Don't you go getting me into that," said Willie and he was off and away with only one comment about Los Angeles. "I'd like to play in that park,' he said. "I might not get so many home runs but I d get lots ot sin gles. That fence 'is right there." The Giants smothered Army, 17-1, yesterday in their annual came with the Cadets. Rigney plans to pitch John Antonelli at Philadelphia tonight against Jack Sanford. Antonelli. who has a 4-3 record, beat the Phils 10-1 April 30, giving up six hits in nine innings. That was his only previous work against the Phils. Sanford, who has a 3-4 record, lost to Sarr Francisco 4-2 on May 2, giving up seven hits in eight innings. That was his only pre vious start against the Giants. Philadelphia has won three of the five games between the clubs. The protest was a direct result of the flare-up between the Pi rates and the Giants at Forbes Field Sunday. Brown said he felt it was "ob vious" that Giant pitcher Ruben Gomez "threw at Bill Mazcroski," the Pirates' second baseman in the first game of the doublehead er. and said he told Giles of his feelings in a 15-minute telephone conversation. The general manager charged the beanball pitch was used by the Giants earlier in the season when the clubs played a series at San Francisco. That was when Pirate players Ron Kline and Hank Foiles were struck by pitches. Me didn't respond to treatment. Today you'd have to tear that Dodger uniform off his back. The Happy Hoosier gained his second complete game victory last night, following up a shutout victory over St. Louis eiglrt days ago, with a two-hit, 2-1 decision at Philadelphia for the last-place Los Angeles Dodgers. The fourth-place Chicago Cubs were beaten 4-3 at Milwaukee in the only other National League game scheduled. Only one game was scheduled in the American League, and the Kansas City Athletics won it, beat ing Baltimore 5-4. Bums 2, Phillies 1 Erskine, once the ace ot the Dodger staff, was shooting for his third no-hitter for 5 1-3 innings, and had a one-hit shutout until ihe eighth while ending Robin Roberts' comeback winning streak at three. The Dodgers scored in the fourth on Don Zimmer's two rim double off the left field screen. Erskine, while padding his rec ord to 3-2 against the Cards and Phils, a couple of pushovers for the 31-year-old right-hander looked plenty sharp in this one. He walked four, fanned four: giving up a single to rookie Chuck Esse- gian with one out in the sixth, and a single to Willie Jones the eighth. A walk. A's 5, Orioles 4 They couldn't. Neither the Yanks nor second-place Boston were scheduled. Only one game was in the books, and that one gave Kansas City a 5-4, 10-inning victory over Baltimore on relief pitcher Murry , Dickson's home run. The Yankees take an unpre cedented pre-Memorial Day lead of nine games into Kansas City tonight, with unbeaten Bob Turley looking for his eighth victory. The A s were blanked lor three innings yesterday by Connie John son as nine-year veteran Jim Bus bv's first major league grand slam homer pushed the Orioles into a 4-0 lead in the fourth and chased Ralph Terry. But the A's then counted three in their fourth two on Bob Martyn's homer, and squared it in the tilth on Harry Chiti's homer. Dickson, the 41-year-old Na tional League castoff, blanked the Birds on four hits in his 6-2-3 in nines, walking none and striking out five before getting the job done himself against Arnie Porto carrero, now 2-2. 10 innings) Bait. 000 400 000 0 4 9 1 Kan. Arch Moore Places Eyes On Title Bout Giants Set Records, But San Jose Folding SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Light heavyweight boxing champion Archie Moore, whose boxing lile keeps rolling right on through his 40's, plans a promotion campaign to win another shot at the heavy weight crown. "Retire, why should I retire?' he asked Monday night after handing veteran Charley Norkus a thorough beating in 10 rounds. I gave 'he better part of my younger days trying to learn this boxing game. Moore did not break the all-time record for knockouts he shares with the late Young Stribiing at 126, but he has probably had few easier work evenings. Relying mostly on his left hand Archie did not lose a round as he jabbed and hooked to the head and body. Norkus, 29, from Port Wash ington, N.Y., came off with c bloody nose and battered face. Weighing a pudgy 196, all of 21 more than the light heavyweight limit, .Moore came in three pounds heavier than his opponent, who always has been a heavy weight. Moore, wno now calls San Di ego his home and maintains he's just a youthful -11 and not 44 as some- records indicate, staggered Norkus in the second round and kept him m trouble but not seri ous danger the rest of the fieht He scored his best shots with left hook combinations in the seventh. Moore savs he'll be clad to cive Canadian Yvon Durclle a chance at the title in exchange for a $100, 000 guarantee or he'd like to fight heavyweight contender Eddie Machen here for a guarantee. In the Immediate future, t h e 175-pound class chamn plans a fight in about two weeks at Sacra mento, Calif., if an opponent can be found. Then he'd like Machen. adding, "when I knock him out. I'll put on the campaign to get Patterson into the ring with me again." Floyd Patterson is t h e heavyweight champ. SAN FRANCISCO (UPD The Giants set attendance records in San Francisco this spring and they'll set more. But 50 miles away the San Jose Pirates of the Class C California League went broke. For the first lime since 1946, Ihe so-called "Prune City" will be without professional baseball The franchise was ordered shift cd to Las Vegas Monday and it is doubtful that too many people cared "We aren't blaming the failure completely on the Giants being so close with their major league baseball," said a ban Jose fan 'possibly the management had omelhing to do it it. And the added problem of a low second division team didn't help. But the loss of the club was the first heavy blow struck at minor league baseball in the West since the Giants and Dodg ers came to the sunny Pacific. DIRE PREDICTIONS At the time of the move, there were dire predictions of what was going to happen to minor league baseball in the West "The Pacific Coast League will be killed, was one cry. "The California League won t lust the season." was another, So far, the Pacific Coast loop has been struggling along in fair ly good manner. San Diego and Sacramento were supposed lo be hit the hard est in the PCL: San Jose and Stockton in the California League. Each of these cities has a home population of near the 100,000 mark up to a half million. They should easily support baseball. But the Interest in Northern California for the Giants has be come tremendous especially in the wake of the big splurge the club has made so far this season in Ihe National League standings. ATTENDANCE IMPROVING "It's possible that after listen ing to the Giants game on radio that the fans just didn't bother to go out to the games a night in our city," said the San Jose man. ' But our attendance was improving. The first few weeks we averaged only about 400 per night. Then it gained to 500; and for our last game on Sunday we had better than 800. Teams in this league are supposed to be able to break even with a 600 attendance." It is possible that San Jose will attempt to get back into the league again next year. Profes sional baseball never has been a howling success in Las Vegas in the past. But the population there has been growing by leaps and bounds and it is possible that the club could prove to be good enough to pay its own way. i In the PCL, Sacramento is sup posed to be tottering, but Presi dent Leslie O'Connor says he hasn't received any distress calls yet. Where a PCL club would move, if the owners can't make the franchise go in Sacramento, is hard to figure. Stan Musial of the St. Louis Car dinals has won seven National League batting championships. Hans Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates won eight. Lightweight boxer Joey Lopes won AAU and Golden Gloves featherweight titles in 1948.
