Willie Mays is the type of base
ball player who could bat .380.
hit 50 home runs and drive in 140
runs. That is how much San Fran
cisco Manager Bill Rigney thinks
of his big man.
"Willie is the best player I ever
saw," Hieney said today. "I said in
the spring he never had reached
his potential. He might drive in
140. bat .M0 hit 50 homers and
lead the league in everything.
Does Rigney expect him to do
just that?
"I'll say this," he answered
can't think of anybody who bas
a better chance.

Mays admits the fast start of
the club has surprised him just
as it has surprised most of the
baseball world.
"Sure, I'm surprised," he said.
"Nobody knew we would get four
boys (Orlando Cepeda, Bob
Schmidt, .lim Davenport and Wil
lie Kirklandi all coming through
like they are. They make a big
difference.
"With Cepeda and Daryl Spen
cer hitting good right behind me
it helps me too. That Orlando is
a strong boy, hits both ways
(right and left field). He is the
most relaxed first year man
ever saw. If he don't win the
rookie of the year prize, he's got
to go real bad.
Can the Giants win it. all?
"That's for the manager to say,
not me," says Mays "I just hope
we can win every game every
day. Everybody is happy. It's just
like 1951 when we were winning
everyday.
And the Dodgers? Are they as
bad as they have looked?
"Don't you go getting me into
that," said Willie and he was off
and away with only one comment
about Los Angeles.
"I'd like to play in that park,'
he said. "I might not get so many
home runs but I d get lots ot sin
gles. That fence 'is right there."

The protest was a direct result
of the flare-up between the Pi
rates and the Giants at Forbes
Field Sunday.
Brown said he felt it was "ob
vious" that Giant pitcher Ruben
Gomez "threw at Bill Mazcroski,"
the Pirates' second baseman in
the first game of the doublehead
er. and said he told Giles of his
feelings in a 15-minute telephone
conversation.
The general manager charged
the beanball pitch was used by
the Giants earlier in the season
when the clubs played a series at
San Francisco. That was when
Pirate players Ron Kline and
Hank Foiles were struck by
pitches.

40's, plans a promotion campaign
to win another shot at the heavy
weight crown.
"Retire, why should I retire?'
he asked Monday night after
handing veteran Charley Norkus
a thorough beating in 10 rounds.

younger days trying to learn this
boxing game.
Moore did not break the all-time
record for knockouts he shares
with the late Young Stribiing at
126, but he has probably had few
easier work evenings.
Relying mostly on his left hand

So far, the Pacific Coast loop
has been struggling along in fair
ly good manner.
San Diego and Sacramento
were supposed lo be hit the hard
est in the PCL: San Jose and
Stockton in the California League.
Each of these cities has a home
population of near the 100,000
mark up to a half million. They
should easily support baseball.
But the Interest in Northern
California for the Giants has be
come tremendous especially in
the wake of the big splurge the
club has made so far this season
in Ihe National League standings.
ATTENDANCE IMPROVING
"It's possible that after listen
ing to the Giants game on radio
that the fans just didn't bother
to go out to the games a night
in our city," said the San Jose
man. ' But our attendance was
improving. The first few weeks
we averaged only about 400 per
night. Then it gained to 500; and
for our last game on Sunday we
had better than 800. Teams in
this league are supposed to be
able to break even with a 600
attendance."
It is possible that San Jose will
attempt to get back into the
league again next year. Profes
sional baseball never has been a
howling success in Las Vegas in
the past. But the population there
has been growing by leaps and
bounds and it is possible that the
club could prove to be good
enough to pay its own way. i
In the PCL, Sacramento is sup
posed to be tottering, but Presi
dent Leslie O'Connor says he
hasn't received any distress calls
yet. Where a PCL club would
move, if the owners can't make
the franchise go in Sacramento,
is hard to figure.

dinals has won seven National
League batting championships.
Hans Wagner of the Pittsburgh
Pirates won eight.
Lightweight boxer Joey Lopes
won AAU and Golden Gloves
