OREGON Confusion Over Orders Grounds Alameda Planes ALAMEDA UPI- All jet planes based at the Alameda and Mcrffett Field Naval Air stations were grounded today by Rear Adm. Wurr E. Arnold as the re suit of confusion over new flight regulations imposed by the gov ernment. Arnold, commander of fleet Air Alameda, said he took the action because neither he nor his aides understood just what the new flight regulations were. Young Actor Picked Up LOS ANGELES W A young son of former movie Tarzan Johnny Weissmuller has been hooked on charge of disturbing the peace John S. Weissmuller and Pat rick O'Neal, both 17, were ac cused in a citizens complaint yes terday of threatening Claud All red, West Los Angeles. Allred summoned police and the boys fled, officers reported. Plane Crash Kills Pair CHAMPAIGN, 111. W An Air Force H57 twin-jet bomber crashed in a field shortly after taking off from Chanute Air Force Base yesterday, killing the two crewmen aboard. The plane disintegrated on im pact and there was some fire, wit nesses told Lt. George Ogles, pub lic information officer at Chanute. Ogles said a witness reported a canopy was ejected when the plane was at an altitude of about 3,000 feet, One of the crewmen apparently got out partially, but ne was so low the wind did not catch his chute. The victims were identified as! 1st Lt. J. T. Flynn. pilot, of In dianapolis, and Capt. K. II Origgs, navigator, of Philadel phia, both stationed at Langlcy Air Force Base, Va. Remorseful Driver Takes Own Life OZARK, Mo. tfl A man was killed when the car in which he was riding overturned yesterday. I-ast night, said Sheriff Clay Hodges, the driver of the car hanged himself in the county jail nere. The driver. Grant N. Knowland (ft-Calif), who seeks the California Republican nomina tion for governor. The message from Washington. D. C, was to a Republican rally in Riverside that Knowland at tended. The senator was in Cali fornia for a weekend of cam paigning. "As a, Californian." Nixon said, "I am proud to be able to work and vote for a man who in every respect will be worthy to lead our stale into the exciting era in which it will become the first state in the nation." Californians predict their stale's population will exceed New York's in a few years. Nixon predicted Knowland would win the gubernatorial race and said, "It is more than just a Con test between Democrats and Re publicans. "Bill Knowland will receive the support of thousands of Demo crats who admire and respect a man who refuses to knuckle down to any pressure group regardless of the political consequences. Knowland told the rally he fa vored "voluntary rather than com pulsory membership in labor un ions ' Knowland and Ally. Gen. Ed mund G. Brown, a Democrat, have cross-filed. California per mits ' candidates to file on both party tickets. No Republican is op posing the senator. Knowland described Nixon last week as the "leading contender and the onlv major candidate" for the 19K0 Republican presiden tial nomination. Brown said Nixon first endorsed Knowland months ago and that the senator's "campaign manager is merely playing the record over again. . . ." San Luis Bill Pushed WASHINGTON fUPI) Rep. B. F. Sisk (D-Calif.t said today he will press for action this week on his bill to provide for joint state-federal participation in Cali fornia s San Luis Project. Sisk said he will urge the House Irrigation and Reclamation Sub committee to approve the measure Wednesday. . The congressmen said further he will ask for subcommittee approv al of the bill "without substantial hange." ' In recent House and Senate hearings opposing witnesses from Northern and Southern California disagreed over certain provisions of the bill. The Southerners claimed it does not sufficiently protect their water rights. Sisk said in a statement he has kept an "open mind" and has been ready to accept alternate propos als for the project if they provided a "workable plan" agreeable to the Interior Department and to the state. 'But no plan meeting these re quirements has been suggested he said. Sisk said he feels the "basic features" of his proposal for de velopment of the San Luis Project are "sound and workable" and should be approved without furth er delay.
