MAY 28. 1953 Auto Industry Leaders Confer, Lay Plans For Possible Labor Deadline DETROIT IM This is showdown week as negotiations between the United Auto Workers and the onto Industry's Big Three enter the final stage. Contracts at Ford, Chrysler and General Motors covering hundreds of thousands of workers expire within seven days or less. With expiration in mind, 250 Ford Motor Co. executives from across the nation assembled here to figure out steps to he taken in any eventuality. The Ford - UAW agreement runs out next Sunday. "Because of the .many uncer tainties involved, the company is preparing to handle any situation that might arise," said John S. Bugas, Ford vice president for in dustrial relations and head of the company's bargaining team. Bugas said possibilities run a Bank Selects New The new trust representative at the Klamath Falls branch of First National Bank of Portland, Wayne Ulair, is an attorney and was form erly associated with the Klamath Indian information and education program for the State Department of Education. Blair's appointment here became effective last week, according to an announcement by C. B. Stephenson. First National Bank president at Portland. He has assumed his du ties in the bank's trust department located on the second floor of the First National Bank building. Blair was graduated in law from Willamette University at Salem in 1954. He served as clerk for Su preme Court Justice Earl C. Ln lourette for a year .and practiced law for a period before accepting a post with the Slate Department of Education. In the latter capacity, ho was stationed at Chiloquin where he gained firsthand know ledge of the Klamath Indian situa tion under terms of the law which terminates federal jurisdiction of the reservation. Chrysler's agreement also ex pires Sunday. General Motors contract runs out Thursday night Ford and GM resumed negotiat ing today with Chrysler waiting until tomorrow. The Big Three legally could shut their plants to force a contract settlement. But there was no hint of what they would do if contract deadlines pass without agree ments. L'AW President Waller P. Rcuther said a management lock out "would mean a deterioration in long-range collective bargain ing." The UAW previously ordered its members to work without con tracts if agreements were not at' tained. The UAW Is standing firm on its demands for an annual wage boost of at least 10 cents an hour, increased supplemental unemploy ment henelits, and cost of living allowances lor retired workers, Iteuther said. Twelve blue ribbon awards of $5 each and 24 red ribbon awards of $2 each will he given. The best of the entries will be exhibited at the fair. AP) - Yale scientists say they have iso lated a hormone from the pineal gland, a mysterious part of the brain that has puzzled research ers for hundreds of years. The hormone lightens the skin shade of test animals, the scien tists said. It may have some .con nection with the skin cancer known as melanoma. The scientists, all members of the Yale Medical School's derma tology section, said they extract ed less than a drop of the hor mone from the brains of 250.000 beef cattle. They still don't know the func tion of the pineal gland, once be lieved to be the "seat of the soul." But they hope that later experiments with the hormone will provide clues. The doctors are Aaron N. Ler- ner, James I). Case, ioshiyata Takahashi, Teh II. Lee and Wa taru Mori. Their work was fi nanced by grants from the U. S. Public Health Service and the American Cancer Society. Italian Vote Near Record ROME Ml A record turnout seemed in prospect today as late voters hurried to cast (heir ballots for deputies in Italy's third post war Parliament. The Interior Ministry said more than 77 per cent of the eligible voters about 25 million cast bal lots yesterday. At stake were five-year terms for all 5 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and six-year terms for the 24B Senate places. Voting is compulsory. two hundred thousand police and soldiers patrolled the booths but there were few incidents. I he generally apathetic, six- week campaign pitied a dozen major parties ranging from the Communists to the Fascists. The exhibit will feature the choice collections of artifacts and arrowheads from this region. At the May 10 meeting. Stanley Kendall, a Henley teacher, was guest speaker and showed a num ber of fossils which he had dug up on his property. He brought to the meeting several large teeth and six-inch toe bone, all thought to have come from a mammoth prehistoric beast. OTI student in Highway Technology, is one of six students arriving early in Anchorage, Alaska to partici pate in the U.S. Army Engineers' student aide program. Robert has been assigned to the Alaska Dis trict headquarters on Ehnendorf Air Force Base overlooking An chorage, Alaska's largest city. His job is in the engineering division utilities section. Robert is one of 70 student aides who will earn and learn on the job with the U.S. Army Engineers. Other student aides from Alaska and accredited engineering col leges across the United States, wi report when school closes for jobs on military construction and civil works projects supervised by the Alaska District.
