to continuing operations without
one. Ford and the L'AW have not
operated without a contract since

Chrysler's agreement also ex
pires Sunday. General Motors
contract runs out Thursday night
Ford and GM resumed negotiat

until tomorrow.
The Big Three legally could shut
their plants to force a contract
settlement. But there was no hint
of what they would do if contract
deadlines pass without agree

L'AW President Waller P.

The UAW previously ordered its

The UAW Is standing firm on

New Hormone
Discovered
NEW IIAVK.V. Conn. AP) -
Yale scientists say they have iso
lated a hormone from the pineal
gland, a mysterious part of the
brain that has puzzled research
ers for hundreds of years.
The hormone lightens the skin
shade of test animals, the scien
tists said. It may have some .con
nection with the skin cancer
known as melanoma.
The scientists, all members of
the Yale Medical School's derma
tology section, said they extract
ed less than a drop of the hor
mone from the brains of 250.000
beef cattle.
They still don't know the func
tion of the pineal gland, once be
lieved to be the "seat of the
soul." But they hope that later
experiments with the hormone
will provide clues.
The doctors are Aaron N. Ler-
ner, James I). Case, ioshiyata
Takahashi, Teh II. Lee and Wa
taru Mori. Their work was fi
nanced by grants from the U. S.
Public Health Service and the
American Cancer Society.
