That diagnosis comes from psychiatrist, Dr. Martin Grotjahn of the University of Southern Cal ifornia. a wii, says ur. uroljahn, " is an angry man in search of a vic tim. A witticism is his way of re leasing repressed hostility. If he doesn t find a victim, he will prob ably suffer from a migraine head ache attack." German-born and educated Dr. Grotjahn has made a search of the cause and meaning of laugh ter ana its relationship to the un conscious. He wrote a book about it entitled "Beyond Laughter." 'A witticism," he said yester day in an interview, "starts with an aggressive tendency or intent an insultlike, shocking thought. By clothing the insult with the veneer of laughter and the con vention of a joke, the wit brings his bottled up hostilities to the surface in a manner acceptable to society. If the wit didn't have this out let, a headache might occur. Thus. thought murder (the witticism) a day keeps the doctor away." Ur. Grotjahn has examined the gamut of comedians, amateur and professional. Some of his conclu sions: i lie Kidder one who ex presses nis own conilicl witn au thority, usually his parents; he imitates his lalhcr torturing his Alll. It s due to an unconscious desire to avoid the guilt of par ticipating in an aggression. "Laughter, as it provides a per missible release of unconscious aggressions, is one of the best safeguards of mental health," he .said. "In fact," he added, "the enter tainer is a friend of psychiatry oven though he is sick and doesn't know it." Dr. Linus Pauling, who opposes 1 additional atomic blasts, said aft- j erwards that "it's too soon now ' to say" whether Dr. Edward Teller's arguments had changed ' his mind. Dr. Teller said he is, nearing 50 and finds it increasing-; ly hard to change his. Dr. Pauling, 56, declared that each superbomb explosion dooms 1 15.000 children to be born with defects in brain or body. Last ! month the California Institute of, Technology chemist and 1954 No bel Prize winner submitted to the United Nations a petition by 9,235 scientists who asked a ban on nu clear tests. Dr. Teller, Hungarian-born nu clear physicist at the University of California, contended that "The moment we stop nuclear testing, Soviet Russia will feel so strong it will want to and will take over the world." He held that the radioactive damage by tests has not been great when measured against sucn nnzards as smog. The broadcast over San Fran cisco s educational station, KQKD was filmed for distribution across the nation.
