FRIDAY, FEBRUARY-14. 1958 HERALD AMD NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON PAGE NINE Score Tests Injured Eye In Batting Cage TUCSON, Ariz. Herb Score is more confident than ever that lie will be. able to resume his place on the mound for the Cleve land Indians after giving his vi sion its stiffest test since he was hit in the eye by a line drive. The 24-year-old southpaw went through a private session of bat ting practice in the cage at Hi Corbett field yesterday that wiped away any doubt about his depth perception. Iron Mike, the mechanical pitch er, was cranked up to last-ball tension, but Score timed the ball to near perfection. "It looked as clear and sharp coming up there as it ever did, he said. Except for a few pepper games late last season, it was the first time Score had had a bat in his Shaw Takes Over Eagle Grid Duties PHILADELPHIA, OB Lawr ence T. (Buck) Shaw signed Fri day as head coach of the National Football League's Philadelphia Eagles, the Associated Press learned. The 60-year-old former Air Force Academy and San Francisco Forty-Niner coach, signed a three year contract at an estimated $20,000 a year. He becomes the sixth Eagles coach since 1950, suc ceeding Hugh Devore who was fired last Jan. 13, more than a month after the AP disclosed he was through. The Eagles are pay ing off the final year of Devore's three-year pact. Devore. got the gale after two losing seasons last in the NFL Eastern Division in '56, next to last in '57. Shaw, a veteran coach who guided the San Francisco 49ers for nine years, resigned at the Air Force Academy three weeks ago. He still, had three years left on a five-year pact. The reason he quit: his busi ness commitments in San Fran cisco, where he is an official of a container, firm, made it impos sible, he said, to devote as much time to the coaching job as Air Force Academy authorities want ed him to. His academy teams won 9, lost 8, tied 2. His- 49er teams four years in the old All-America Conference (38-14-2) and five in the NFL (32-26-2). won 70, lost 40, tied 4. Indian Teams Vie The Chiloauin Town les 'and Sprague" Rivtff "Indians host two outside teams Saturday night in a basketball doubleheadcr sched uled for Chiloquin High School's gym at 7:30 o'clock. The Townies play the Warm Springs Magpies in the featured game and Sprague River tangles with Alturas' Red Devils in the opener. "I think that I'll ask Bobby Bra gan to put me in the outfield." Herb said after the batting ses sion. "It would be a shame to waste a hitter like me just pitch ing every fourth day." Will he be "gun-shy" as a re- suit of the accident that nearly ended his career? "I expect I'll be hit by a lot more line drives before I'm done pitching," he said. "All pitchers get hit, mostly on the legs. But to catch one smack in the eyi that's a million-to one shot. It hap pened once. He said he usually loses sight of the ball after it has left his hand because in the follow- through his head goes down to nearly knee height. But he has no intention of trying to revise his natural delivery. 'I have to pitch my way," he said, "and my way is to follow through in a fashion that makes it impossible to follow the ball on its way to the plate. If I tried to change I'd probably lose some of my speed and maybe hurt my arm. I'd rather take that million-to-one chance of being hit on tho head by a line drive." Jackie Pung Open Leader ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (UP) Jackie Pung of San Francisco, a hot golfer on a cold course, teed off with a seven-stroke lead in the second round of the fifth annual St. Petersburg Open today. The veteran Californian shot a record - .breaking 66 Thursday, despite . cold temperatures and strong winds, to take a comforta ble lead over runnerup Betsy Rawls of Spartanburg, S. C, who finished with a 73. Miss Pung's 66, the best card s,he ever marked, set a women's record on the Sunset Golf Club course, a tight - tree-lined 6.116 yards. She also set. a ladies PGA record when she birdied five holes in succession, starting with the fifth, to go out in 31 strokes, five under men's par. Miss Pung had only 24 putts for the 18 holes and only 10 on the first nine holes. She had only one bogey, which was at the 17th hole when she missed a six-foot putt. Miss Rawls, who shot a 73 Thursday, won the Tampa Wom en's Open last month. She was trailed by Louise Suggs of Sea Is land, Ga., and Patty Berg of St. Andrews, 111., who shot first-round 74's. Mary Ann Reynolds of Albany, Ga., led the amateur entries by carding a 76.
