OREGON PAGE KIVK One-Way Grid Plan Vetoed DUN'SMUIR Willow Slreer which bounds the new post office on the south side, will not be made into a one-way street or widened to its full limit at pres ent, a committee ot city officials decided on Friday. The matter was brought up at the council meeting last week when the council heard a plea from Postmaster William Welch that the post office had been de signed with two way traffic in mind. When post office construction was started last fall, a 10 foot width was added to the north side of the street. The council commit tee decided against a 10 foot wid ening on the south side pn the basis of costs to the city, incon venience to . the south property owners and present street ade quacy. George Mannee and Louis Ober kamp. council incumbents, have announced they will seek to retain their posts at the city election, April 8. Both were appointed to fill unexpired terms last fall and thus far they are unopposed. . The council has also voted to place a 10 cent special tax boost to purchase fire equipment and a 12 cent special tax boost for street equipment before the voters in April. Both rates are to run five years. High School Selects Play GILCHRIST The play "It's All in the Family" has been selected for presentation at Gilchrist High School this spring. This will be un der the direction of Anna B. Dole zal and tryouts will be held in the near future: Barbara Hosey. a senior at Gil christ High School, was the win ner of the Betty Crocker Home maker of Tomorrow examination given in December. Her paper will be entered in the state com petition which will name Oregon's candidate for the contest. Barbara received an award pin designed by Trifari of New York, and a personal letter of congratulation from Betty Crocker. Junior and senior students of Gilchrist High School were judges for a local cartoon contest on wa ter conservation which seventh and eighth grade pupils entered. The cartoons were an outgrowth of study of water conservation by the seventh and eighth graders. First prize was won by Sandra iloebhu, and second prize by Richard Hardman. Honorable men tions were awarded to Ellen Ken. dall, Delphine Fletcher, Jon Har ris, Jane Aiming, snaron rage, Sharon Mount, Sandra Moeibus and Reuben Tina. V V -' J 'r u i '.: . ft, r K ' DR. OTOTAKA HIGASHI AND MISS KAREN KARLSEN GRANGE NEWS FORT ROCK Fort Rock Grange meeting Sat urday, February 8. again took up the question of telephone service to North Lake County. Members were urged by J. D. Coram, coun ty commissioner for this area, to attend the hearing in Lakeview set for 9:30 a.m. February 25 in the matter of an application by Beaver State Telephone Company and West Coast Telephone Com pany. The phone companies nave ap plied for a PTJC order authorizing the transfer of West Coast prop erty in the Lakeview District, in cluding Lake and Klamath coun ties, from West Coast to the Bea ver State Company. Neither Fort Rock nor Silver Lake are served by any telephone company although Silver Lake was until recent years served in a limited way by West Coast. Service came to Fort Rock via LaPine some 25 years ago. The Fort Rock Grange has been continually ac tive in attempting to bring ade quate service to North Lake Coun ty. Plans were made to begin Wednesday to lay the new floor in the grange hall. C. W. Boley is chairman of this project. Mrs. Richard Morehouse was obligated at the Saturday meet ing. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Kimsey of Summer Lake were guests. Kim sey is master of Summer Lake Grange. Assassination of President James J A. Wl When a sudden January storm dumped four inches of snow on Richmond, many local employers let their workers off early so they could get home safely. One of thejirst firms to close for the day was the Eskimo Pie Corp., manufac turers of ice cream bars. Medics Study Heart Disease Two scientists from other parts of the world arc at the University of Oregon Medical School in Port land seeking the answer to heart and other diseases. Both are here under grants from the Oregon Heart Association. I Dr. Olotaka Higashi, member of the faculty at Tohoku University Hospital in Japan, has been at: the medical school for 18 months, i Karen Marie Karlsen, from Oslo, 1 Norway, working with the doctor in the coagulation research labor atory, which is under the direction of Dr. Arthur J. Seaman, associ ate professor of medicine. Miss Karlsen has worked as a techni cian for the internationally famous Dr. Paul Owren who has developed-; methods in prevention of second attacks for healed coronary heart patients through the continuous use of anticlotting drugs. Dr. Higashi is studying the feasi bility of advance prediction of in travascular clotting during life. If some system for identifying per sons having great hazard for clot ting can -be discovered, it would be possible to institute preventive ther apy, it was explained. Dr. Higashi and Miss Karlsen symbolize what is transpiring throughout the world in the fight against heart disease.! Heart Fund Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, February 23.
