Stanford fullback, has taken over the rushing lead in the Pacific Coast Conference while Washing ton states boo Newman continues as the leading passer and total of fense gainer, according to figures released today by the PCC Com missioner's office. . ' Shea is the third ball carrier to emerge as a weekly leader. He gained 86 yards last Saturday for a season total of 472 yards. Ore gon's Jim Shanley and Nub Beam er of Oregon State, who have al ternated for top honors in previous weeks, rank second and third with 467 and 406 yards, respectively. Newman has completed 52 oass- es in 100 attempts for 669 yards and six touchdowns to rate ahead of Jack Douglas, Stanford, 40 com pletions, and Howard Willis, Ida ho, 31. Newman has added 55 yards rushing for 724 total offense yards while Willis 656 and Joe Francis, Oregon State, 577. ahanley has moved into a tie in the scoring lead with Willis, each having scored six touchdowns for 36, points while Shea and Jack Fanning, Washington State, have 30 points each. (UP) Coach Len Casanova is still'stressing de fense to his University of Oregon Ducks as they prepare for Satur day's game against Stanford although the Webtoots have al lowed only 25 points in six games. Prothro hopes to counter the Cougars with a potent running at tackif tailback Joe Francis and fullback Nub Beamer get back in top physical condition by Saturday. - MOSCOW, Idaho (UP) Three likely ends were snagging passes Wednesday in a battle of replace ments for University of Idaho first stringer Larry Aldrich, who was benched with injuries, Coach Skip Stahley said Bud Dowling. Bob Eyler and Don Rid ener are the top prospects for the starting position against .Montana State University Saturday. BERKELEY, Calif. (UP)-The University of California Bears held a full scrimmage Wednesday in preparation for Saturday's game against UCLA. Quarterback Joe Kapp and halfback Jack Hart were on hand for the drill. . Coach Pete Elliott stressed goal LOS ANGELES (UP)- UCLA fullback Barry Billington today was confined to the UCLA jMedical Center suffering from a type of pneumonia. Billington suffered a flu attack last week and doctors discovered Wednesday that a virus infection turned into a form of pneumonia. It was a blow to the Bruin lineup because it means that the first string fullback definitely will miss Saturday's homecoming game with California. LOS ANGELES (UP) The Uni versity of Southern California Tro jans were prepared today to meet Washington on a wet, muddy field at Seattle Saturday. SC Coach Don Clark said the forecast calls for rain this week end in the Northwest. The Trojans for the past several days have been getting used to running on damp turf by practicing on a flooded field. Indians Head Attack; Ducks Lead Defense LOS ANGELES The two teams which meet this weekend in a Pa cific Coast Conference football "showdown" Stanford and Ore gonhave taken the lead in total offense and total defense, respec tively, team statistics from the PCC Commissioner s oil ice showed today. Oregon State, which formerly held both top positions, has been bumped to second in each case as Stanford leads In total offense with 333.3 yards per game to 328.5 for OSC and Oregon has the best mark on total defense, 230.3 yards, to 248.3 for the Beavers. Oregon Stale continues as the top rushing team with 245.5 yards to 225.3 for Stanford while Wash ington State is first in passing with 150.7 vards to Stanford's 108. Ore gon has allowed the fewest rush ing yards, 132.7 per game, to ia for Stanford, whUe Southern Cali fornia has given up but 76 yards to foes on passing to 73.2 for Ore gon State. UCLA leads in team punting ano interceptions. It has picked off 12 enemy aerials and has averaged 42.2 yards on its punts. Oregon is the top team on kick returns wnn an 11.8 yard average on punts and 28.1 on kickoffs. Drticoll, 206 Pine Tree Butldlng, Klnm PCL Heads Set For Meet On Damages SACRAMENTO, Calif, to -Officials of the Pacific Coast and other baseball figures began ar riving Thursday for a key meeting on the PCL's biggest problem the invasion of California by the major leagues. The PCL directors meet Friday on a number of questions born of the New York Giants' move to San Francisco and the Brooklyn Dodgers shift to Los Angeles, The question of damages to be paid to the PCL is right at the top of the list. And so Is the problem of new homes for the clubs that may be bumped by the majors turn west ward. This second phase could result in a number of shuts as the San Francisco Seals, Hollywood Stars and Los Angeles Angels plus pos sibly Sacramento and San Diego seek new homes. Salt Lake City is expected to enter a strong pitch for a PCL club with a delegation, including Mayor Adiel F. Stewart, expected to attend. Spokane, Wash., and Phoenix, Ariz., also are expected to bid for teams. Horace Stoneham, president of the Giants, will urge the PCL to approve a trade of the Giants' Minneapolis club for the ban Francisco franchise held by the Boston Red Sox. Lane Victory Over Zulueta Opens Doors CHICAGO (UP) Boxer Kenny Lane had two ways to go for a world championship today and his manager, canny Jack Kearns, planned to take him down which ever road might lead to a title first. Lane, for sometime the No. J challenger for Joe Brown's light weight crown, won recognition, in Illinois at least, as the No. 1 con tender for tho defunct junior wel terweight title Wednesday night with a unanimous 10 round deci sion over the 8th ranked light weight, Cuban Orlando Zulueta, Lane scored his 49th win in 54 pro bouts and ran his winning streak to 16. It was the second lime Lane has beaten Zulueta and the victroy brought him within one of his longest winning streaks as a pro fighter. lie won his first 17 bouts after quitting amateur completion and later won 14 straight before he lost to Tony-,DeMarco nearly two years ago, nis last flefeal. It was zulueta s win loss in 'ro bouts and his fourth defeat in his last five outings. The Illinois commission decided before the fight to recognize the victor as the No. 1 contender in the junior welterweight class, 140 pounds, in an effort to stimulate boxing. The National Basketball Associ ation's one-time scoring wonder made his coaching debut before the home folks Wednesday night and suffered through 48 minutes as the Detroit Pistons routed his Lakers, U5-U6. It was the second loss in a row for the Lakers, the only winless team in the circuit. George Yardley pumped in six field goals in the first period to spark the Pistons to a 77-63 half time lead and he wound up game high scorer with 28 points. Six Lakers scored in double fig ures, topped by Dick Schnittker's 17 points, in the only action of the night. All clubs are idle tomgni.
