Sam Coon 2nd District It was a great shock to all of us to see the life of such a weir loved man as Governor Paul Pat terson end so suddenly at the height of his brilliant career. I served wifh Paul in the Oregon Senate when he was Us president, He was a most capable legislator, He was honest, sincere end untir ing in his efforts for the best Interests of our stale. Oregon has lost a great citizen. The Patterson family has lost a dearly beloved husband and father. I have lost a real friend, I attended the fourth annual prayer breakfast for . President Elsenhower and his cabinet last Thursday. The President spoke at the breakfast. It made me feel good to see how well he looked. I can report real progress on my VYapinitla Irrigation Project Bill. It has been reported out fav orably by the full Interior and In sular Affairs Committee of the House This bill would provide wa ter for 2,100 acres near Maupin. My bill to authorize construction of the Crooked River Reclamation Project near Prineville is getting a lot of my attention the.e days. The bill provides for a dam near Prineville and water for about 20.000 acres. A Federal Highway Bill to com plcte our 40.0UU mile Interstate highway system seems to have a very good change of passing Con grc.ts this year. I favor it. Last year I voted both for Prcsi. dent Eisenhower's highway bill and the Democratic bill, but ncith er of tnem passed. This year. Republican and Demo cratic leaders have gotten together early in tne session. They seem to have Ironed out many of their diliercnces on highway legislation, They have agreed to a pay-as-you go program. It would be financed in part by a one-cent Increase in the federal gas tax. and an in crease in the tax on dlesel fuel The federal excise tax on gaso line used on tne farm will soon be a thing of the past. This week I voted for a bill to end this tax. The bill passed the House of Ren. rescntatlves. As passed, the bill Increases by 100 million dollars the amount of money available for disaster loans to businesses and home owners. President Eisenhower has signed the bill. Bob Petersen, owner of 10-month old Copper Hope, is a 13-ycar-old newspaperboy who saved earn ings from his paper route to be come owner of the registered col lie. This is the dog's first showing. It's good news when Kostelanetz, an outstanding conductor in radio and the recording field, says "I'd like to do all I can in television." He was quite amazed to learn that many people had the impression he was opposed to participating in the medium. "Television ha., the highest pri ority in my thinking these days," Kostelanetz said. "The great prob lem in any new medium is to find out Just how to do it." - He believes the nation's leading symphonic orchestras should ap pear regularly on TV not in long programs, to begin with, but In half-hour concerts. "A viewer must feel he's occupying a fine seat in a concert hall. He must get the musical message of the compo sition. The nervous camera work that often marks orchestral appear ances on TV is distracting to the audience. Thus when camera swings to a close-up of a tympanlst striking a couple of Inconsequential notes the audience is missing the over-all musical message. You would not be so distracted, he points out, if you wers sitting in Carnegie Hall. Last Sunday an intelligent bit of planning by the creators of Omni bus (CBS-TV) enabled viewers to see two fine programs. Omnibus did not begin the first of Its three part series on the Constitution un til Hallmark Hall of Fame had completed Its presentation of "The Good Fairy" on NBC-TV. "The Good Fairy." Ferenc Mol- nar's charming whimsy, proved to be grand TV entertainment, thanks In large part to the Interpretations of Julie Harris, Waller Slezak and Cyril R i t c h a r d under George Schaeffer's light-handed direction. Omnibus added another cluster to Its distinguished television serv ice ribbon by declining to fiction alize history. The Constitutional Convention of 1187 and the Virginia ratification of 1788 came glowingly to life in dramatic flashbacks prompted by that urbane and friendly Boston lawyer Joseph N, Welch.
