Jackie Barnett Probably World's Fastest Tunesmith Br ALINE MOSBV United Frem Hollywood Writer HOLLYWOOD (UP)-One of the unsung geniuses of television is man wno writes a song every day all because Jimmy Durante mur ders popular music. On the Durante show you see his credit line. "Songs by Jackie Barnett." That's his only notice for turning out the equivalent of a Broadway how almost every week. For each program Jackie pens seven songs some ox them dashed off in five minutes, making him probably the world's fastest tune- smith. He also has the distinction of furnishing tunes lor the only regular TV show that has original music. "It's all because Durante can't ting popular songs," Jackie ex plained today when I tracked him down at NBC's television studios. "He does a type of music we call Durante music. It's bombastic. Popular songs Just aren't geared lor him." Jackie started out as a gag writ er for the program and graduated to his unique post of song writer. By now he has turned out more than 600 original songs for the Dur ante show. After spirited argu ments, he has even Induced the aentlmental Durante to try singing mambos and spirituals. The program's writers often or der certain songs from Jacklo. Oth er times Jackie will bo Inspired to do a tune and has the writers fa shion a show around it. Most of Ills original tunes are buried forever aflor the TV show. Some are too Durantc-lsh for others to sing. Most Jimmy prefers to keep lor himself. Dinah Shore and Dan ny Thomas once asked to use Jack ie's songs, but "Schnoz" turned them down. Some Barnett tunes have slipped Into general u.e. however. Helen Traubel uses one to close her night club act. Jimmy has recorded sev eral and sings others in his night club act. Jackie feels his amazing output of songs is of one great benefit It saves popular songs from being massacred by Durante. "Years ago Durante was respon sible for a big song hit," related Barnett. "I heard 'Nature Boy' and told Jimmy. "This has a lot of heart. It would be a change of pace for you." Jimmy sat down and sang it for me." Barnett then did for me a fabu lous imitation of Durante singing "Nature Boy": "A little shy. . .and sad of eye. . .and what a bum was he." "I said, Jimmy, better foraet It," Barnett went on. "He never sang it. And that is the reason tha song went on to become one of the biggest hits In the last 15 years! President Elsen hower is not an avid viewer of tele vision. He simply doesn't have the time. But he Is deeply Interested in television and watches a variety of programs whenever he can. Tough Norwegian snllors flourish ing pistols and machine guns boarded and captured four Red fishing boats and a factory ship Monday for violating Norway's ter ritorial waters. Norwegian torpedo boats raced out at dawn after radioed reports from Norwegian fishermen said "several" Red boats which es escaped Monday sneaked back dur ing the night. Heavier warships steamed from north and south to the area, be tween Stad Foreland and Svlnoey lighthouse, on orders radioed from Ihe west coast navy headquarters at Bergen. Lange broke off his visit to Cop enhagen, where the Nordic Council is meeting, when he received the news. The commander of one Norwe gian boarding party fired two Warning shots into the deck of a Russian ship at the feet of its captain when he refused to follow orders to sail into port. Norwegian sailors kept the Russian crew cov ered with submachine guns. The captured ships were part of Russian tlshlng fleet of 70 to 80 ships spotted netting herring "well within" the four-mile limit of Nor wegian waters. Swift armored navy torpedo boats dashed into the middle of the fleet, catching it by surprise, and capturing four mod ern. 200-ton steel ships and their 40-man crews. Co tfrri "fv V" KLAMATH fAi.kt. It would make interesting news if one could report the specific favorite programs of the Presi dent and Mrs. Eisenhower. But that's top secret. As the Eisen howers and their official family are keenly aware, their personal likes and dislikes would attract so much public Interest in certain programs that the result could be most unfair to many other pro. grams. Whenever possible both the Pres. Ident and his wife view at lea.st one televised news program in the evening. For relaxation, when time permits, the President en. joys watching a good mystery drama. Mrs. Eisenhower, on the other hand. Is an avid television watch- er. She takes TV programs pretty much as they come. She enjoys music and there is one specific weekly dramatic program that is her personal pick of the many regular dramatic shows on the screen. Naturally the Eisenhowers al ways are interested in seeing news program pickups of the President a televised press conferences. Presidential Press Secretary James C. Hagerty says the White House Is greatly impressed by the numbers of letters that pour in after a televised press conference. "The President thinks of tele vision as a great medium of both entertainment and education," says Hagerty. "He believes it should be applied to government and the news events of the world. It helps keep people informed every day."
