HERALD AND NEWS, KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 1956 PROBLEMS EXIT WHEN WANT ADS ENTER - PHONE 8111 PAGE FIGHT Kefauver Lays Charge Of BOSTON Wl Sen. Kefauver (D Tenn) said today the United States has been placed In a position where "the trump cards" of Its diplomacy "are all threats of atomic war." He said in a speech prepared for the New England Weekly Press Assn., that a "lew more blunders" like his "brink of war" interview and "Secretary of State Dulles will have outlived his usefulness." Kefauver, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomina tion, said he does not doubt Dulles wants peace, but that "it only seems to me that he takes the 4743 So. 6th Street, City eodimig Timme Is Yoyo Tninnie jiy i' I The newspaper is the basic advertis ing medium because it does not have to compete with other interests and activities for your attention. "He says that he carried us three times to the brink of war and artfully brought us back again," Kefauver said. And he add ed: "Secretary of Defense Wilson during all this period, does not appear to have moved up tn the brink of war. There is no evidence that the armed forces were ready for any final engulfing war. The people of the United States cer tainly wero not prepared for a war." "There are now enough bombs on both sides to blow to oust every target of any military significance in the whole world. Kefauver con tinucd. "It Is not a time for boyful games and fanciful illusions. " Attacking administration domes tic policies, Kefauver said that de. spite the apparent prosperity of tne nation, business lallurcs are rising, and It Is mostly small busi nesses which are falling." Ml I 11""" i i : ' V' ? t.'SlU't Whe n You Write A Letter, Be Sure The Address Is Correct Writing Legible WASHINGTON (UP) When next you write grandma, make sure the address is right. Else it miht wind up like 20,625,463 letters and packages did last year in the dead letter office. Postmaster General Arthur K. Summerfield's crew is a little upset about the carelessness of the letter-writing public. Over 18 million of those misguided missives wound up in the trash. About 3'j million were greetings for the Yule to people who never got wished a merry or happy one. A lot ot the wrong-way letters contained money. If the sender puts his return address in the left hand corner, the douch is returned to him. About $110,131 was re turned last year. The rest went Into a relief fund. Well, the dead letter office is so worked up, it has come up with a sot of mailing rules that all or us should paste in our hats First, write so the Post Office can read it, even if you have to print. Make sure the address is correct, written in full without abbreviations. The return address Use the postal zone number. And if you think your letter is over weight, put it on the scale to assure enoimh postage. Abbreviating the names of slates can run into trouble. For instance, carelessness with the pen can make "La" for Louisiana look like "la" for Iowa. Write 'em out. Likewise there can be confusion in "NC" "ND" as "Nil". Also there are similarities within ft single state. Like Bcllmawr and Pelmar, in New Jersey. Cullen and Crellin, in Maryland. There is Elvaston and also Evanston, in Illinois. Georare Fost. who heads the co ordinating unit of the Minneapolis Post Office, recently reported a variation on the problem of names of streets. A housewife reported she and her husband had moved and had filed the proper change of address form. She wondered why they were not receiving any mail. Bills, even. Post looked into the matter and learned that the couple had moved into the only house on a recently cut - through, block - long street, which never ne.d been reported to the Post Office. Clerks had been sendinjr the letters back. James Sheoner. a letter peddler at Pottsville. Pa., knows about streets that are hard to spell. He says that the name of a street, properly spelled "Mahantongo" in his town has been spelled 208 ways since he has been touring his ap pointed rounds. "I nave. Jim says, "properly delivered letters with addresses spelled all the way from C (Chantoogd) to Z (Zoomahan- tongo. It sure wears on a man! Some people overdo the business of a complete address. Like the Easy Money Geo. N. Taylor The traveling salesman had the dniRKist's order and next, the salesman would church on the edge of the town. This was a strange request and being; an of ficer of the church, the drug gist went along. Stepping up be side the pulpit, the salesman kept repeating Easy Money go up to the Easv Money." It Ceo. N. Taylor seems that years before this trav eling salesman and his pal had put on ft big revival and stirred the citv. The druggist said that some of their best workers were then received. But now a strange fact. Neither the revivalist nor yet his singer believed the Bible. But thev wanted easy money and they took this way of getting it. How explain It? Let the Bible speak You are born again by the word of Qod that lives and abides for ever. That Is the sense of it. See 1st Peter 1:23. This Messace sponsored by n Oregon Lumberman. Adv. Br t cs? " V Tr 17 v J n case reported by Postmaster JoKn Whalen of Icard, N.C. A woman addressed a letter like this: "Downtown furniture store. "Run by two brothers who look alike, "Across street from dime store, "Appliance store at one end of street. t "Dry goods store at other, "Gulfport, Miss."
