you write grandma, make sure the
address is right. Else it miht
wind up like 20,625,463 letters and
packages did last year in the dead
letter office.
Postmaster General Arthur K.
Summerfield's crew is a little
upset about the carelessness of
the letter-writing public. Over 18
million of those misguided missives
wound up in the trash. About 3'j
million were greetings for the Yule
to people who never got wished
a merry or happy one.
A lot ot the wrong-way letters
contained money. If the sender
puts his return address in the left
hand corner, the douch is returned
to him. About $110,131 was re
turned last year. The rest went
Into a relief fund.
Well, the dead letter office is
so worked up, it has come up with
a sot of mailing rules that all
or us should paste in our hats
First, write so the Post Office
can read it, even if you have to
print. Make sure the address is
correct, written in full without
abbreviations. The return address
Use the postal zone number. And
if you think your letter is over
weight, put it on the scale to assure
enoimh postage.
Abbreviating the names of slates
can run into trouble. For instance,
carelessness with the pen can
make "La" for Louisiana look
like "la" for Iowa. Write 'em out.
Likewise there can be confusion
in "NC" "ND" as "Nil".
Also there are similarities within
ft single state. Like Bcllmawr and
Pelmar, in New Jersey. Cullen and
Crellin, in Maryland. There is
Elvaston and also Evanston, in
Illinois.
Georare Fost. who heads the co
ordinating unit of the Minneapolis
Post Office, recently reported a
variation on the problem of names
of streets. A housewife reported she
and her husband had moved and
had filed the proper change of
address form. She wondered why
they were not receiving any mail.
Bills, even.
Post looked into the matter and
learned that the couple had moved
into the only house on a recently
cut - through, block - long street,
which never ne.d been reported to
the Post Office. Clerks had been
sendinjr the letters back.
James Sheoner. a letter peddler
at Pottsville. Pa., knows about
streets that are hard to spell. He
says that the name of a street,
properly spelled "Mahantongo" in
his town has been spelled 208 ways
since he has been touring his ap
pointed rounds. "I nave. Jim says,
"properly delivered letters with
addresses spelled all the way from
C (Chantoogd) to Z (Zoomahan-
tongo. It sure wears on a man!
