Photo by Dwayne Prather Pedestrian Deaths Down While exposure to accidents hs been increasing steadily, pedestri an fatalities have shown a drop of 61 per cent since 1935, the Oregon State Motor Association announced today. The Oregon AAA office cited these factors in the increase In ex posure to pedestrian accidents flnce 1935; motor vehicle registra tion, up 123 per cent: motor ve hicle mileage, up 149 per cent; population, up 37 per cent. "The Met that our pedestrian deaths have dropped in the face of this Increased exposure Is a great tribute to the many excel lent pedestrian accident prevention programs in effect in our cities and states," the Oregon AAA de clared. "It also is a tribute te the improved walking practices on the part of pedestrians, as well as the better driving practices ob served by motorists hi our cities." Each year, the state of Oregon and 24 Oregon cities of 5,000 and more population enter the AAA national pedestrian protection eon test which Is designed to stimu late Interest in pedestrian safety activities throughout the year. Last year, of the 24 Oregon cities en tered, 16 won awards in their var ious classifications. An important element in encour aging official action in pedestrian accident prevention Is contests of this nature which bring national attention to cities and states that do outstanding jobs in saving pe destrian lives, according to James Banks, of the State Traffic Safety Division, who acta as Oregon con tact man for the AAA pedestrian contests. Deadline Set For Protests February 3 is the deadline for Individuals or' organisations to file protests against a proposed seven per cent general railroad freight rate Increase, according to Barry H. Donnelly, traveling freight and passenger agent for the Southern Pacific. Donnelly said that protests should be filed directly with the Interstate Commerce Commission in Washington, D.C., and not with any railroad company. The increase Is approved by the ICC to go into effect February 25. Titled X196, it will cover all com modities moving in Interstate traf fic on all railroads. Donnelly said that verified state ments in opposition to the rail roads' petition should be filed on or before February 3. Then, on February 13, Division Two of the ICC will hold a hearing for cross examination of the various parties involved. On February 20, there will be a hearing before the entire commission. Both hearings will be held at Use commission's offices in Wash ington, D.C. February 20 is also the deadline for briefs on the case, which should be filed with the chairrhan of the ICC in Washington, D.C. OTI Students Seek Work More than 100 students at Ore Ron Technical Institute need part time work, according to Walter H. Hoag, dean of men. The OTI Placement Bureau has classified these students according to abilities and experience. Many businesses and individuals In Klamath Falls have used OTI stu dent help, and have commented enthusiastically about the quality of the students' work, Hoag said. Because of the technical skills being learned by students at Ore tech, they are particularly val uable as workers in the carpentry, machinist and painting trades, as well as many others. These young men and women are also willing to do manual work of many vari eties in order to help pay their expenses at school.
