Pedestrian
Deaths Down
While exposure to accidents hs
been increasing steadily, pedestri
an fatalities have shown a drop of
61 per cent since 1935, the Oregon
State Motor Association announced
today.
The Oregon AAA office cited
these factors in the increase In ex
posure to pedestrian accidents
flnce 1935; motor vehicle registra
tion, up 123 per cent: motor ve
hicle mileage, up 149 per cent;
population, up 37 per cent.
"The Met that our pedestrian
deaths have dropped in the face
of this Increased exposure Is a
great tribute to the many excel
lent pedestrian accident prevention
programs in effect in our cities
and states," the Oregon AAA de
clared. "It also is a tribute te
the improved walking practices on
the part of pedestrians, as well as
the better driving practices ob
served by motorists hi our cities."
Each year, the state of Oregon
and 24 Oregon cities of 5,000 and
more population enter the AAA
national pedestrian protection eon
test which Is designed to stimu
late Interest in pedestrian safety
activities throughout the year. Last
year, of the 24 Oregon cities en
tered, 16 won awards in their var
ious classifications.
An important element in encour
aging official action in pedestrian
accident prevention Is contests of
this nature which bring national
attention to cities and states that
do outstanding jobs in saving pe
destrian lives, according to James
Banks, of the State Traffic Safety
Division, who acta as Oregon con
tact man for the AAA pedestrian
contests.

OTI Students
Seek Work
More than 100 students at Ore
Ron Technical Institute need part
time work, according to Walter H.
Hoag, dean of men.
The OTI Placement Bureau has
classified these students according
to abilities and experience. Many
businesses and individuals In
Klamath Falls have used OTI stu
dent help, and have commented
enthusiastically about the quality
of the students' work, Hoag
said. Complete work records are
available at Hong's office.
Because of the technical skills
being learned by students at Ore
tech, they are particularly val
uable as workers in the carpentry,
machinist and painting trades, as
well as many others. These young
men and women are also willing
to do manual work of many vari
eties in order to help pay their
expenses at school.
Further Information may b ob
