' Air Force Requests Okay To Construct New Tower Ttiree United States Air Force officers, stationed at the Klamath Falls Jet Interceptor Base, ap peared before the city council i .Monday nlsht to clear the way for , new control tower at the munl-'-cipal airport. The officers, Lieut. Col. Robert H. Larson, Major O. . Whitten r.and Capt. Ray Royce explained it 'was the desire of the Air Force r to construct . the new control tow er on a site owned by Ihe city. They said plans for reconstruct ing the present tower had been , abandoned. I, The officers explained that the present structure was not ade quate. He said he hopes and expects President Eisenhower will seek re flection, but that if he doesn't, any -GOP standard bearer pledged to continue the Elsenhower program ''will win. " "It would be folly of the first order for the Republican party to ' nominate someone who would go contrary the program the public " has accepted, which is the Eisen hower program," Potter told re porters. He said a newspaper survey in industrial Detroit recently indi- ' cated that about 20 per cent of voters who cast Iheir ballots for "Democratic candidate Adlai E. Stevenson for president in 1952 ' would vote for Eisenhower in 1956 if he and Stevenson are the nom inees. Potter termed that evidence that "the bugaboo of a Republican de pression has been exploded. . . . The fear factor that has influenced many of the laboring men to vole 'the Democratic ticket has been exploded." "There is a tendency for people to vote their pocketbook," he said, "and the laboring man today has a fuller pocketbook than he ever had in history. The government will bear the ex pense of this project. A resolution of approval will come before the council next week. The Air Force officers also ob tained council approval for instal lation of overrun barriers at the airport. Tills type of safety device will stop jet planes traveling at a high rate of speed within 500 feet. Under the Air Force plan, barriers will be placed beyond the takeoff section at each end of the runway. According to Colonel Larson, the device will have no affect on conventional type planes. He said the barriers have averted many serious accidents after planes with tricycle-type land gear have over shot runways. The council also approved pay ment of $11,000 to C. H. and J. F.' Kelly for a restricted easement on 50 acres of land adjacent to the airport. t The easement was the subject of a court battle last week before Circuit Judge David R. Vanden berg which culminated with a jury verdict tavormg the Kelly broth ers. The jury held that the Klam ath Basin ranchers were entitled to $11,000 instead of $6,750 offered by the city. The city will also be required to pay court costs and attorney fees. Resignation of Mrs. Howard Barnhisel as a member of the city park board was accepted. Mayor Paul Landry said Mrs. Barnhisel had contributed, much to the wel fare of Klamath Falls as a park board member. - Faster Plane Delivery Asked TAIPEI, Formosa. Ifl The commander in chief of Chiang Kai-shek's air force expressed hope Tuesday there would be fast er deliveries of U.S. planes to bol ster the Chinese Nationalist air arm. Gen. Wang Shut-mlng said in an Interview the air force needs all around modernization. First priority in deliveries, lie said, should be given to combat aircraft. "Rtger" Wang, as he is genera'lv known, said the Communist air, potential on the mainland, is in creasing. In addition, 1500 other houses were still unusable because of water damage. Some evacuees were returning to iheir homes, but Civil Defense and the Red Cross were still caring for more than 1000. The death toll In the two-county area stood at 11. R, F. Denbo, Chamber of Conv merce manager of Humboldt County, estimated the loss in the area, at 50 million dollars, with about 15 millions damage to high ways ana bridges alone. Paper Estimates Red Naval Power TOKYO im The Soviet Union has doubled its naval power In the Far East recently with the addi tion of more than 30 ships in cluding two cruisers the newspa per Asahi said Tuesday. Asahl quoted the Japan Self Defense Board. The report said Ihe additions, led bv a 13-000-ton cruiser of the Sverdrov type, docked at Vladivos tok In September. They included more than 10 destroyers and large submarines, Asahi said. The newspaper said the Soviet navy In the Far East before the increase included two cruisers of the 12.000-ton Kaganovich class, 40 destroyers and 100 submarines. Reports from Taipei recently said the Chinese Communists were leasing naval facilities to the So viet fleet off the China Coast. Kung Pin Mei, Roman Catholic bishop of Shanghai, will go on trial soon for alleged "counter-revolutionary" ac tivities. The reports say Commu nist authorities will demand the death .sentence for the bishop and some 500 priests and laymen ar rested with him last September. Mansfield Hits Red Budget Cuts . By G. Although the Russians peg the tuble at 25 cents, its purchasing power is considerably less. S. defense spending currently is at annual rate of 34'i billion dollars. Mansfield said, "We not only have cut all we can afford to In our military spending, we have made some cuts we shouldn't afford." He said the Eisenhower adminis tration's proposals to ask Congress for a billion-dollar increase in the defense budget for the bookkeep ing year starting July 1 "will not provide any more muscle" but would go to meet higher costs of defense items. Potter said the Russians' "public announcements and their actions are far different things,' adding: "Our Intelligence agencies tell us of a large buildup in their air force and their submarines, which doesn't seem to fit tn well with n 10 per cent cut in their budget." Highways crews repaired the Klamath River bridge and opened U.S. Highway 101 north of Eureka for the first time In a week. However, travel to the south was limited to 30 miles. An article In the Federal Reserve Board's monthly bulletin made no direct comment on the economic significance in the recent growth of consumer credit. On the whole the article ap peared to Indicate no alarm. The demand for consumer cred it, In company with sharp demand for other types of credit, was said to have tightened credit availabil ity so that lenders are becoming more selective and are tightening the terms under which they lend. ' In the first quarter of thla year about 60 per cent of all new cars were sold on credit. By the third quarter about 75 per cent of new cars were being sold on credit.
