OREGON 8 8 8 i K I 8 8 N i , f ,'" s - 1 Entrance With a Flourish J if 1 i it FANFARE of- pleating lines !i featured in this entranceway. It it particularly appropriate for a two level house. Wood paneling ii used to good advantage with spaces for planters which add graciousness.to the entranceway of this modern home. First Impressions are often more . Influencing than they probably should be, and that goes (or the first Impression of your home, too. A guest's attitude toward you may be formed from the moment he steps inside your front door, and that is why a home's entrance should reflect your own gracious ness and hospitality. A guest feels more at ease if the entrance is set somewhat apart from the main entertaining or liv ing area, for he or she may re move wraps or freshen up here Inconspicuously. You may choose to exile your entrance completely with a parti tion formed by a closet or dividing wall, but it is usually more ef fective if a planter divider or wall section suggests the division. It may be further set apart if it is lowered or raised, on a different floor level. Regardless of your choice for entrance division, Douglas fir lum ber will adapt Itself to any style or design. It has been used very effectively for a half wall with boards forming simple pillars in a straight or louvered effect above the solid wall. This beautiful but rugged softwood may also be fash ioned into a shoulder-high planter with plants potted in a metal liner above, and storage for linens, gamea or even a music wall be low. Planters should be placed near a window or under a skylight, for growing things need to be near the sun for best results. You will also find that if beautifully-finished fir paneling is used for living room walls and builtins, an entrance divider of the same wood will blend the entryway ef fectively and make the door open ing less obvious. Doors that open directly into a living area may be secluded artist ically by building screens of Doug las fir or west coast hemlock. These may extend from the wall just past the door opening, and may be in any design. Small blocks of two-by-fours may be placed at random or in patterns between a series of two by four studs of the same material. This gives a con temporary abacus-like screen pat tern. Or, Mandarin-inspired geome tric pieces of wood, set frames of your own design are striking for a modem room. Some of the shapes may be painted, some left natural for a decorator effect. Speaking of decorating, the en trance offers the imaginative home maker a wonderful opportunity for some effective self expression. For Instance, for the woman who would a-daring-do, why not an indulgence in some elegant colors in the en trance. They can be striking, when used on one wall, on the door, or modestly for framing effect around the trim of the entryway. GIFT FOR BABY If you are buying a gift for a new baby, the new portable plas tic bathtubs, sized to fit the wee one but designed exactly like the good old-fashioned tub make ap pealing gifts.
